What to Catch
If you’re aiming for Black Marlin, you’re in the right place! Head out from Cairns, QL, also known as “the Marlin capital of the world,” where they come to spawn each year. The main season lasts from September till late December. What makes these trips epic is a high chance of landing “Grander” Marlin, that weighs over 1000 pounds! If you lack fishing experience, rely on your fishing guide and learn from the best to hook this beast.
There are three types of Marlin you can target in Australia, the other two being White and Striped. Other Billfish species, which are mainly tagged and released after catching, are Sailfish and the increasingly popular Broadbill Swordfish.
Impressive as it is, the list doesn’t end there. You can also catch Yellowfin Tuna, Bluefin Tuna, Narrow-barred Spanish Mackerel, Mahi Mahi (Dorado), Barracuda, Wahoo, and Cobia. These fish can be kept and they will make a delicious lunch afterward.
Which Trip to Book
Catching big game species requires you to go further offshore, which means that a full day trip is the right choice. These usually last between eight and nine hours but can go way longer – some even up to nine days! Multi-day trips are common with Aussie guides and they are well prepared for them. The boats are equipped for these extended adventures, with full bathrooms and sleeping rooms. You should always check with the captain about what’s included in the price on multi-day trips and what you need to bring with you.
You don’t have to delay your fishing trips because your friends and family are busy, either. Just take a shared trip! “Shared” trips often mirror private trips, so you’re not missing out on anything.

The only reason for the four stars, was the evening is short due to the early sunset as it is autumn and days are getting shorter. Otherwise it would be a 5 stars.

Be prepared for all types of weather and that any catch is a good catch. We went in May and this day was cloudy and the temp had dropped.
It was an estuary morning half day trip, I caught a Blue Salmon..other species caught on the trip were Trevally, Mangrove Jack and Grunter.
So although the dream was of a Barramundi...just remember to enjoy the thrill, the company and that each day brings a different catch!

If you are planning to take cached fish back, ensure you make arrangements to transport it in the car. You may not get good bags and blood may drip from the given bags to take the the catch home at the end of the trip.

Dont be he'll bent on Barra, they are sneaky bastard, but go with Cap Flo and catch magnificent fish, especially spanish mackeral, Pete got an 83, Matt was just as close, big fish big excitement great day
