Deep Sea Fishing in Grand Cayman

It’s hard to pick a bad time for deep sea fishing in Grand Cayman. You can catch big game fish year-round in these waters, including the coveted Blue Marlin. With the deep sea less than a quarter of a mile from shore, anglers can indulge in this sport without spending hours to reach the fishing grounds.

What to Catch and When to Target it

Many anglers come to Grand Cayman hoping to catch a Billfish close to shore. Blue Marlin here typically weigh no more than 150 lbs, certainly not the largest specimens you can find. But what they lack in size, they make up for with reliability. They are biting in Grand Cayman all year long, and your chances of catching one are excellent. White Marlin and Sailfish are also seen on occasion during warmer months, but anglers rarely catch them.

While deep sea fishing Grand Cayman, you can also catch Mahi Mahi, Yellowfin Tuna, Blackfin Tuna, Skipjack Tuna, Wahoo, and Barracuda. Your chances of landing any of these species are good year-round, but Wahoo and Yellowfin Tuna definitely have a distinct peak season that captains take note of. Wahoo’s season runs from November through March, while the season for Yellowfin Tuna extends through June. Your absolute best chance of catching a Yellowfin Tuna is during the spring.

How to Fish

The most popular method used to catch Marlin is trolling. Many anglers rely on their own tricks of the trade when it comes to bait selection. Whole baits such as Ballyhoo, Mackerel, Squid, and Bonito often prove effective, as do strip baits or artificial lures.

Trolling is also the tactic of choice when targeting Yellowfin Tuna. Similar to Marlin fishing, anglers might use a wide variety of whole baits, strip baits, or lures. Anglers will also chum for Yellowfin Tuna on occasion in order to lure them closer to the water’s surface. Skipjack and Blackfin Tuna can be targeted with spinning gear or daisy chains.

The feisty Wahoo is best targeted while trolling at high speed and great depths. Using a wire line or weighted lines is recommended. You may use rigged or whole baits, strip baits, or lures. Some anglers live bait fish or kite fish for Wahoo, as well.

You can lure Mahi Mahi to the surface by chumming or trolling. Once you spot them, you can hook them using spinning gear and live bait, such as Squid.

A half day reef fishing trip is a great way to start. Itโ€™s not very far from shore and the water is beautiful. Youโ€™ll catch fish and have fun.

Be prepared for active seas and if you get sick put your patch on in advance and take your meds in advance as we did and you will be good.

Told the captain we had young kids, so catching a good amount of fish was the goal more than keepers. Mission accomplished, plus the boat ride was fun and fast.

Lots of options; deep drop, reef, or blue water. Grand Cayman is unique in that it has access to the deepest water in the Caribbiean. Try to hit the tuna bite earlier than July to give you the best options for a big catch.

Put sunscreen on before you get in the boat and dont forget your legs. Water can get rough farther out so take the less drowsy dramamine.

This year was better than expected. Many Wahoo were late to leave this year; making the trip that much more exciting :)

Reef fishing is spectacular in Grand Cayman and you are all but assured bent rods and good eating. Mix that in with a trip to stingray city or snorkeling and it will make for an awesome day. We opted for an offshore trip and had a GREAT time. "Gunner" is an extremely well-equipped boat with the best tackle money can but (rare for a charter boat) with a top-notch crew that is both knowledgeable enough to impress an experienced angler and very kid-friendly. It is tough to find both.

Take a keen look at the winds and weather. Unusually strong winds of 20 knots prevented us from deep sea fishing, but nonetheless, had a great day of reef fishing with a good variety of fishing options... along with a final pull of a barracuda as we trolled back to harbor.
