Top Deep Sea Fishing Charters in Cabo San Lucas
Deep Sea Fishing in Cabo San Lucas
The deep sea fishing Cabo San Lucas has access to is probably the best in the entire world. Cabo sits right on the meeting point of the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez. What this means for you is year-round catches of an unbeatable range of big game pelagics without the need for long journeys.
Blue, Black, and Striped Marlin can all be caught out of Cabo, as can Swordfish and huge Pacific Sailfish. If you somehow get bored of Billfish, there are plenty of Mahi Mahi, Wahoo, Tuna, and Sharks around, too.
With so many fish to choose from, it’s no surprise that Cabo has become a major tournament hotspot. Events run throughout the year, but the Bisbee’s Black and Blue dwarfs them all, with millions of dollars in prize money up for grabs each October.
You couldn’t find a more perfect place to put a sportfishing town. Head west out of the Marina, and you hit the deep troughs and steep seamounts of the Pacific Ocean. Head east, and you find sheltered waters full of huge pelagic fish even in the roughest weather. This gives you endless options of where to wet your lines.
Cabo’s Pacific fishing grounds are the home of legends. The waters are deeper and more varied here. Many spots are great for specific species, while others draw a bit of everything just a few miles from town. The further you go, the lower the fishing pressure, but you can find monsters everywhere!
Cabo Falso Lighthouse
The lighthouse serves as a marker for many surrounding spots, and sits a stone’s throw from the Marina. These aren’t the deepest waters, but you can catch monster Marlin within sight of land here.
San Jaime Bank
Sitting next to the deepest section of the Tinaje Trough, seamounts rise thousands of feet above the surrounding water. This is Grander territory, and plenty deep enough for every species on our list.
Golden Gate Bank
Just north of San Jaime Bank, many consider this the best Striped Marlin spot in town. Considering Cabo is known as “Striped Marlin Capital of the World,” that’s pretty heavy praise.
Why travel 50 miles when you have amazing fishing right on your doorstep? Well, if you’re set on world-record Marlin and don’t want to share the fishing grounds, this is the spot for you.
Sea of Cortez
If the winds kick up too much out west, just head to the sheltered waters of the Sea of Cortez. You may not find the same dramatic depth changes here, but you can still expect double-digit hookups of your favorite pelagic predators.
Santa Maria Canyon
This spot is less than 10 miles from the shore and is home to Marlin, Sailfish, Tuna, Mahi Mahi, and more. Unsurprisingly, it can get pretty busy here, but there are plenty of other spots nearby if it does.
Tucked round the head of the peninsula, this is a reliable spot even in rough weather. Tuna, Wahoo, Mahi Mahi, Sailfish, and Marlin can be caught in its deeper reaches.
The 1150 Banks offer the best of both worlds. You will be fishing in seriously deep water but will still have some protection from the winds and waves. This is a particularly good spot for Sharks.
Cabo deep sea fishing mainly focuses on trolling. Some captains prefer to use soft plastics, which will come in a range of colors and spread patterns. Others use dressed Ballyhoo or live Tuna, and tuna tubes are a common sight aboard the bigger boats in town. Fly fishing is increasingly popular when targeting the huge numbers of Striped Marlin and Sailfish in the area. There are local fly fishing specialists who stock quality equipment, so expect 16-wt rods, heavy Billfish line, and thick monofilament tippets, as well as a variety of custom flies.
