Deep Sea Fishing in Playa Del Carmen
Deep Sea Fishing in Playa Del Carmen
Tucked behind Cozumel Island on Mexico’s Riviera Maya, Playa Del Carmen may seem a bad place to look for big fish. The open Atlantic waters are a long way away, and there’s a huge reef in between. Don’t let that fool you, though. The deep sea fishing Playa Del Carmen has access to is incredible, and it’s just a couple of miles away!
Blue and White Marlin, Sailfish, Wahoo, Mahi Mahi, and Tuna all spend much of the year here. Many local charter captains claim you can catch Billfish every day of the year. We’ll need to do some serious field work before we’re sure about that, but Playa Del Carmen’s big game scene is certainly no tall tale.
What to Expect from a Deep Sea Fishing Trip
If you want to catch a Blue Marlin on a four-hour trip, you stand about as much chance here as anywhere else on the planet. Deep trenches in the ocean floor mean the Billfish bite starts as soon as you leave the harbor. The ocean currents that carved these canyons draw tons of great bait past town, giving big game pelagics a million reasons to spend the summer here.
Of course, just because the fish are close, doesn’t mean they’ll be easy to catch! Blue and White Marlin are some of the hardest fighters in the ocean, and Sailfish are famous for their acrobatic displays. If you time your trip right, you could land all three of these fish in a single day, earning you a place in IGFA record books for bagging a Billfish Grand Slam.
Fishing Seasons
Playa Del Carmen’s Billfish bite is best in May and June. This is your best chance to catch all three in one day, but you can find big Billfish in large numbers as early as March and as late as August. It all depends on how warm the waters are. Mahi Mahi also peak in May and June, but Wahoo and Tuna are around all year long. One thing’s for sure: whenever you go, you won’t be short of fish to fight.
Fishing Techniques
Trolling is the most common technique in Playa Del Carmen’s bluewater scene. Both lures and live bait get great results here, but bait is rarely caught before the trip. Most local charter guides are experts in trolling lures, and may throw dressed baits into the mix as well. If you’re set on live bait, it doesn’t take long to catch and you won’t have to travel far once you’ve caught it.
