The deep sea fishing Puerto Rico fishing charters specialize in is all about big hits, hard battles, and seriously good fun. Blue Marlin top the guestlist aboard the island’s many sportfishing boats, followed by White Marlin, Sailfish, Mahi Mahi, Wahoo, Yellowfin Tuna–all your big game favorites are invited, and it’s going to be one heck of a party!

What to Expect from a Deep Sea Fishing Trip

Whether you’re a tournament pro or a first-time angler, Puerto Rico’s deep sea fishing has some real selling points. Blue Marlin show up within swimming distance of land when the bite’s at its best and charters rarely go more than 10 miles offshore. Even a half day trip can be hugely productive–perfect for if you’re new to the game or have a busy schedule.

If you’re a serious sportfishing type, Puerto Rico’s bluewater scene can reach epic heights. Billfish Grand Slams have been landed here in the past, as well as a few grander Blues and plenty of Marlin over 800 lbs. White Marlin put up a great fight, and Sailfish have a long run. Mahi Mahi don’t get that big here, but there are a ton of “peanut” Mahi, which make for a delicious meal at the end of the day

Trolling is the name of the game on most trips, using big game lures or teasers and pitch baits. Around San Juan, the government has set up buoy FADs which they plan to add surface and underwater structure to. Local captains also put a strong focus on following birds and topwater activity on the hunt for feeding fish.

Deep Sea Fishing Seasons

Whenever you come, you’ll always find fish to fight. Blue Marlin peak February-June around San Juan, and have a second rush along the west coast August-October. White Marlin are around April-July, while Sailfish, Mahi Mahi, and Wahoo peak November-April. Show up in late summer and you’ve got a good shot of landing Longbill Spearfish, which is a rare feather in any big game angler’s cap.

The island holds over a dozen Billfish tournaments each year, including one of the oldest and most important competitions on the planet: San Juan’s International Billfishing Tournament. Visit during any of these events, and you’ll want to book well in advance. Better still, take part! This is a great place to take your game to the next level and many an angler has caught that fish of a lifetime in the deep waters around Puerto Rico. Fancy being one of them?

What People Are Saying About Deep Sea Fishing in Puerto Rico

"June fishing trip"

Robert E Lewis fished with Castillo Tours - 48' The Legend on June 25, 2017

Great day on the water with friends. First deep sea fishing trip ever and we enjoyed it thoroughly. The only thing that could have made it better was to have caught some fish; however, when your fishing that's never a guarantee. If your looking for a good time on the water with guys that know what they are doing this is your group.

"Deep Sea Fishing 6-28-16"

Barb Caudill fished with Double Hook Charters on July 3, 2016

We having nothing but good things to say about our deep sea fishing trip. The captain was great to work with. We had to turn back early due to two of our people in the group getting sick but the time we spent on the ocean was great. They had drinks we requested, snacks and food waiting for us when we got to the boat.

"Puerto Rico Fishing"

We thoroughly enjoyed our time deep sea fishing with Captain Luis. I routinely fish on vacation and found the experience to great. The boat was clean, well maintained, plenty of bait and top of the line equipment. Fishing wasn't the greatest the day we went out but Luis tried very hard to find them and the weather was perfect. Highly recommend!
