Any given day on the deep waters out of Clearwater is ideal to wet a line. Clearwater offers a great variety of migrating fish species and there is always something in season and biting.
Grouper and Snapper bite almost year-round. Spring, summer, and fall are rich with Sharks, Kingfish, Spanish Mackerel, Barracuda, Tuna, Mahi Mahi, Wahoo, Bonito, Sailfish, and what not. Wintertime produces reef fish, Grouper, Snapper, Amberjack, and many more.
How to fish
To get the real taste of the Clearwater’s deep sea, you will need a 6+ charter. It will take you somewhere between 25 and 40 miles offshore, where you can catch Tuna and Kingfish along the others during their seasonal runs.
On a short trip, you will be able to try yourself in bottom fishing. Your captain will anchor the boat, drop a weighted hook to the bottom, and wait for the bite. When it begins, it’s fast and furious! Tasty Snapper and Grouper are usually among the main targets.
For the bigger boys like Amberjack, you will need a 12+ hour charter. The reef donkeys chill about 40-50 miles offshore, right near the highly sought-after Red Snapper. The ride can be a bit lengthy but trust us - every minute is worth it.
When you’re done catching big Snapper (which can be up to 20lbs) and massive Grouper, you can go for some trolling. Who knows how many Tuna, Mahi Mahi, Wahoo, or Sailfish you can find?
But the best deep sea fishing in Clearwater happens 50-80 miles out. Once you venture out into the blue waters and hook your bait, the action begins. When you get one of the big boys, they will put a serious fight. Just think of all the Sailfish, Wahoo, Mahi Mahi, Grouper, Yellowtail, Red, and Mangrove Snapper, Blackfin Tuna, Amberjack, Cobia, Kingfish…
