Deep Sea Fishing in Orlando
Known as “the Theme Park Capital of the World”, Orlando’s blue water fishing scene is probably not the first thing you’d think of when heading to town. The incredible deep sea fishing Orlando has access will give you a day out as exciting as any rollercoaster, though. Titusville and Port Canaveral are right on Orlando’s doorstep, and offer incredible big game fishing out at the Gulf Stream and beyond. So let the kids enjoy Disney World, there’s a fairytale playground of screaming drag and huge hits waiting just down the road.
What can I expect from a deep sea fishing trip?
Here’s the great thing about deep sea fishing near Orlando: you can be battling Billfish within a few of hours of leaving your hotel. It takes about an hour to get to the dock, but once you’re there you only need to head 20 miles to find good pelagic action. Venture 50 miles, and you hit the Gulf Stream, the world’s busiest big game highway. This is where dreams are made, with Blue and White Marlin, Sailfish, Blackfin and Yellowfin Tuna, Mahi Mahi, Wahoo - we’d keep on going, but we’re pretty sure you get the picture.
The other great thing about Orlando deep sea fishing is that it really doesn’t matter when you go. Marlin dominate the deep all summer long, and big schools of Tuna set the topwaters on fire from spring through fall. During the winter, the great Atlantic Sailfish migration sweeps up Florida’s eastern Coast, making double-digit hookups a realistic expectation on longer trips.
Florida charter captains basically wrote the book on catching big Billfish. You’ll be using heavy trolling tackle for Blue Marlin with lighter gear to coax White Marlin into their famous acrobatic displays. You will either be using dressed Ballyhoo with a spread of colorful teasers or you’ll be bridling whole Bonito and Skipjack. But if trolling rules the summer seas, kites define the winter. The most iconic – and effective – way to target Sailfish is by kite fishing. Nothing attracts these guys faster than skipping fish along the surface, and nothing gets your heart going like the sight of a sail rising out of the water behind your bait!
How much will it cost?
Full day trips cost around $800 on a decent sportfishing boat and even less on a center console. These will give you easily enough time to target Mahi Mahi and Wahoo, but if you’re after big Marlin, you’ll want to book a specialty Gulf Stream charter. Gulf Stream trips usually last 10-12 hours, and start at around $1500, depending on the size of the boat.
