Deep Sea Fishing in Sarasota

Sarasota Deep Sea Fishing may not be what the area is best known for. But there are still great deep sea species around if you are willing to make the trek. Many species can be found all year round, while the main pelagic favorites are most present during the hot summer months.

What to catch and where to find it

You can find big Amberjack in the deeper waters around Sarasota, as well as plenty of monster Snapper and Grouper. Most Sarasota party boat fishing will focus on these species, going around 20 miles out. They won’t usually be willing to make the long treks required to target big pelagic species. This makes the upgrade to a private charter well worth it for serious big game anglers.

If you are looking to catch Wahoo, Sailfish, or decent sized Tuna, the best deep sea fishing spots like The Elbow and the West Drop are a good 50 miles away. This means that you will need a full day charter if you want some decent fishing time once you get there. Competition is fierce among Sarasota deep sea fishing charters, though, and you will find plenty of captains ready to make the long trip out to these deeper waters.

When to fish

Large bottom fish can be found year-round a few miles out from Sarasota. This makes for productive bottom fishing in deeper waters, even in the blessedly cool and dry winter months. The best time to target Billfish is from late spring onwards when they follow the baitfish closer towards the shore. By the heat of summer, you have a decent chance of catching Blackfin Tuna, Wahoo, and Sailfish on a standard eight-hour charter, although you may want more time if you are looking for a trophy specimen.

Even when the gulf looks smooth it is rougher than you think. Dramamine, or stay in the bay.

Maybe research the type of fish you want to catch? Ask locals or your Captain? Our Captain asked us and no one in the group knew what we wanted to fish for. Our Captain was happy to help us out. We had a great time!

Get a charter or guide right away. Thereโ€™s too much water and different ways to do things until you see how they operate first hand.

We really just wanted the fishing/boat experience and werenโ€™t too concerned about catching things. Only my daughter caught a fish but thatโ€™s the way it goes sometimes.

Josh is a great guide. Caught alot of fish in many different areas. Ask him to take you to the "honey Hole" dock fishing. Caught a fish on almost every single cast. This is a true review..Mark Gleisner, Oconomowoc, wisconsin.

Captain Scott was great, he put us on the fish. At each stop he took the time to explain what type fish we may catch but also the technique that we should be using. We had a great day, catching snapper, catfish and a tripletail. This trip truly had the fish that got away, a giant tripletail that got away as it neared the boat. We definitely would recommend him and looking forward to future trips.

Water temp is a very warm 90โฐ plus, so certain types of fish are not running and/or biting. Sarasota is still beautiful this time of year, so I would still recommend it.

Be flexible with inshore offshore when the trip comes around. We wanted offshore but when the seas are rough the bays are protected and much calmer

It was pretty windy while we were there. There were some storms in the Gulf that probably threw the captain some curveballs to deal with. It was a good trip, but the captain seemed a little disappointed with the results. We are from the North, so the fishing still was excellent by comparison.

This was my first time fishing in Sarasota so I don't have a good basis for rating the experience. he weather was a bit tough the day we went so that may have affected fishing conditions

We caught plenty for dinner. I had hoped to catch larger fish. They averaged 8 -12 inches. Great variety. Mostly bottom fishing. Still a lot of fun.
