Deep Sea Fishing in North Carolina

Thanks to the Gulf Stream flowing along its coast, the Tar Heel State features a unique offshore playground, ideal for anyone looking to wrestle big fish. It’s an adrenaline-fueled fishery, tailored for anglers seeking to set new personal bests. To start your adventure, just hop on one of the numerous North Carolina deep sea fishing charters and you’ll be in for the experience of a lifetime.

This part of the East Coast is famous for its Tuna fishing. Legendary Bluefin make their way through the Gulf Stream each winter. During other times of the year, you can battle it out with bruiser Yellowfin Tuna, as well as their smaller relatives, Blackfin and the occasional Bigeye.

In addition to Tuna, you’ll also have a shot at catching Billfish if you visit North Carolina during summer. Blue and White Marlin, as well as speedy Sailfish start showing up around June, with July and August being the best months to go for them. Billfish are some of the fastest, toughest fighters in the ocean. Catching one poses a crowning deep sea fishing achievement.

Aside from the species mentioned so far, you’ll often target tasty Mahi Mahi and lightning-fast Wahoo. However, if it turns out that the pelagic bite is slow, there’s also the option to do some bottom fishing. Drop your bait to the bottom and you’ll see the likes of Amberjack, Tilefish, Snapper, and Grouper biting. Anglers with experience can also try deep dropping for the fierce Swordfish.

The Outer Banks, and Hatteras in particular, offer the quickest journey to the offshore fishing grounds. However, you can also start your trip from Beaufort, Morehead City, or Atlantic Beach. If you find yourself in the very south of North Carolina, Wilmington, Southport, and Carolina Beach are just some of the places where you can find deep sea fishing charters.

Don't let a little sea sickness interfere with going out and having fun. I really want to come try again and we caught a total of five fish despite my sea sickness.

Take a dramamine the night before the trip if you think you even might get sea sick! Once the boat stops and you're still rocking and rolling in the waves it hits you hard! But definitely take the trip! It was so much fun for the one that wasn't sea sick :)

CB is a great little beach town. Bracketed by Wilmington and Southport - it's a good place to stay, eat, fish & beach.. or drive 30 mins and explore some of the other local areas. Several very nice golf courses nearby too

Contact the Captain you are booked with and get as much info as you can from him. Capt. Vinny knew what was coming with a late weather forecast change, and let us know the night before our trip what we were to expect. So we made a change of plans and set out on schedule to a different destination. May weather in North Carolina is somewhat unpredictable and changes fast. So keep in touch up to departure and they will put you on the fish!

Start with a shorter trip with an experienced captain (such as Captain Randy). These guys know the sound so well, youโ€™re almost guaranteed to have a great time.

Be prepared for weather to change on you but May is great for Mahi and may still find some Wahoo around. If you are wanting to target Blue Marlin this is a good place to do so.

When you are researching a boat to fish with, contact the Captain and get their opinion when it would be best to go fishing for what you want to catch. I talked often with my Captain so we could plan for a great trip on the water.
