Deep Sea Fishing in Charleston
The best deep sea fishing Charleston has to offer is a solid 60-mile trek away, and not for the faint-hearted. But when do finally get out there, you will be greatly rewarded for your patience. Marlin, Tuna, Sailfish, Mahi Mahi, and Wahoo all patrol the warm currents of the Gulf Stream, and Swordfish lurk in the deep chasms below. This puts Charleston up there with the best of them for big game pelagic battles.
What can I expect from a charter
Charleston deep sea fishing charters are long. 10 and 12 hour trips are very common and are a must for anglers who want to hit the best fishing grounds with enough time to actually catch something. Most guides know this, and the offshore boats play for speed more than size, with vessels above the 35’ mark are less common than you might expect for such a famous destination.
Once you get out to the fishing grounds, you will start trolling from spot to spot, covering lots of ground to maximize your chances of a catch. When targeting Marlin you can expect the standard Low Country spread of live Ballyhoo and vibrant lures such as Sea Witches. For Tuna, anything goes - trolling live bait is the common go-to, but casting with anything from jigs to poppers have brought in big Blackfin on many an occasion.
The early summer months offer some of the best for deep sea fishing in Charleston. Blue and White Marlin head the action, flanked by large numbers of Sailfish and Mahi Mahi. By the end of June, tournament season is over but that just means less competition out at the fishing grounds. The best Tuna bite comes a few months later, with the biggest Yellowfin and Blackfin Tuna of the year usually caught around October. This is also when Wahoo are in season. As if things weren’t exciting enough already!
How much will it cost?
The average price of a Gulfstream charter is around $1500 for a decent center console and $1800 and up for a sportfishing boat in the 30-35’ range. Whatever you choose, you can expect tournament-grade tackle, outriggers, and plenty of bait. Beyond that, it’s a choice of whether you want a more fishing time or a more comfortable trip - the smaller boats will get you there faster, but the ride won’t exactly be relaxing.
