Deep Sea Fishing in Galveston
Galveston deep sea fishing has grown quite a name for itself over the decades. Less than an hour’s drive from the center of Houston, there’s much more to this popular tourist destination than just funfairs and sandy beaches. So get out on the water. Galveston deep sea fishing charters offer you a ride that will rival any rollercoaster in terms of fun and excitement.
What to catch (and where to find it)
As far as fishing the Gulf of Mexico goes, the Texas coastline is right up there. Fishing trips out of Galveston can have you targeting anything from Sharks to Sailfish. The deep seas are made for adrenaline seekers and this is your chance to test the waters.
Most deep sea fishing trips will take you from 20 to over 40 miles from the coast. And with Cobia (locally known as Ling), Kingfish, and all types of Sharks out there for the catching, you don’t need to go far to grapple with the big boys.
You’ll find some of the best fishing around the shrimp boats when they’re in season, which is a good part of the year. Releasing a trail of chum that predatory fish can sniff out from miles off, these hulking boats are a hotspot for reel screaming action. Even when the shrimp boats are back at the dock, an impressive collection of underwater reefs and wrecks and oil platforms keeps the action coming thick and fast.
Get out to 60 miles offshore, and it just gets better and better. This is where the Gulf’s favorite pelagics hang out: Mahi Mahi (Dorado), Wahoo, Blackfin Tuna, and Sailfish could all be out hunting for bait. Bottom fishing these blue waters raises giant Grouper, Snapper, and Amberjack. Take an overnight trip, and you could be targeting the likes of Yellowfin Tuna and Blue and White Marlin. There’s nothing wrong with being spoiled for choice!
When to go deep sea fishing in Galveston
The best fishing usually begins in May and continues through October. Late spring and early summer will often have fairly murky waters until you get about 40 miles out, but by midsummer, blue waters come much closer to the shore. Deep sea fishing trips run all year round, with great fishing available in the winter, too, if you don't mind the longer run and the choppier waters.
Whether you’ve come here with friends, family, or coworkers, it’s hard not to find a charter that suits you in these waters. Private fishing charters and shared fishing trips are both available from Galveston Island. Never mind if you’ve never fished before or if you’re a pro after the catch of a lifetime. The deep sea fishing Galveston has to offer is something you don’t want to miss.

Speck bite was slow so maybe we did ok. Kids wanted shark but the shark s/u wasn’t there. Saw lots shark at fish cleaning. Guide said he’s more blue water deep sea guide. Not enough bait so 45 min boat ride for more bait. He Didn’t know what I had booked. Would use guide for over night tuna trip. Seems that’s his gig. Took my son deep sea fishing for his birthday and booked a trip with Rod Bending Charters. Had a great day of fishing. Our guide Jason Woods made sure we had everything we needed, took us to different area to catch a variety of fish, and for the final 8ft hammerhead. My son was so excited from trhis experience he hasn’t stopped talking about it yet. We will definitely be doing this again.
