Deep Sea Fishing in Bay Area

There are countless things California is famous for, and deep sea fishing in the Bay Area is definitely one of them. This fishery is abundant and there’s something for every fishing appetite. Here, you don’t have to venture far out to be in the deep waters and sometimes you can land trophy fish merely 10 miles from shore.

If you’re after the more prestigious and elusive fish, local fishing guides will take you to a big drop off in the ocean floor, about 30 miles from  shore. Then it’s time to hunt the bluewater royalty!

What to Catch

Whether you’re going after delicious Chinook Salmon, mammoth Lingcod, or impressive White Sturgeon – the Bay Area is the place to be. With over a dozen Rockfish species, a short – but productive – Albacore Tuna season, and a variety of Sharks, adventure is  but one cast away. Striped Bass and White Seabass are also popular year round. Anglers can come any time of the year and have the best time reeling in their targeted species, or a mixed bag of catch, if they so prefer.

What to Expect

To get the most out of your fishing trip, team up with a local captain and head out. Depending on the species you’re targeting, there’s a variety of techniques you can use – from trolling and bottom fishing to drifting and popping.

When you’re going deep sea fishing, booking longer charters (8 hours or more) is customary, because the trip to the fishing grounds usually takes about an hour. You can reserve your spot on a fishing boat for $250–$350 per person. There are charters that also offer group prices, and you can pay anywhere from $1,000–$1,300 for a group of six people.

For your fishing jaunt, you’ll need a valid California fishing license, rain gear, layered clothing, and plenty of drinks and food. Your captain will take care of the fishing equipment, live bait, and some will even clean your catch after the trip. If you’re ready to experience deep sea fishing in the Bay Area, you’re one booking away from your next fishing escapade!

Halibut! Lots of them. HUGE!!! Leaving from Fisherman's Wharf passing Alcatraz, seeing the sun come up over the east bay ills, watching the yacht regatta, passing all the freighters and cruise ships, going under the bridges, seeing the rising sun reflected off the skyscrapers; it's a gorgeous place to catch BIG fish.

If you've never fished the Delta, this is a great starting point. All services available. June was a bit tough because of the post spawn, but whether or not you catch fish, being on this water is a treat. Beautiful place!
