Bowfishing in Florida

Combine skills, thrills, and worthy rewards when you try bowfishing in Florida. The Sunshine State boasts three coastlines, plenty of lakes, and some productive rivers that all offer up exciting action with a bow and arrow. Whether you’re a pro or heading out for the first time, there’s plenty to keep you on your toes!

We’ll start in freshwater, where you can actually help conservation efforts by bowfishing. Target Carp and Tilapia, and you’ll be getting rid of two invasive species! Not only that, but they’re also pretty tasty, so don’t let ‘em go to waste. Other catches include Catfish and Garfish, along with monster Alligator Gar, but these can only be caught in strict limits, and we recommend only taking them if you like the taste of their meat!

When it comes to saltwater, there’s a range of hunting grounds to choose from. Inshore flats are popular for bowfishing in Florida, while the reefs further out are also productive. Flounder, Trout, Sheepshead, Mullet, and Drum are popular inshore catches, while Rays, Snappers, Groupers, and even Kingfish and Cobia are all possible along the reefs.

Florida bowfishing guides offer a range of trips to cater to your needs. Choose from a few hours on the water to a full day extravaganza, where you’ll maximize your chances of catching fish. Most experienced captains prefer to go out after dark, using specialized lighting to help you get a peek of your target. That just adds to the fun, so it’s worthwhile experiencing! Just make sure to check whether all the necessary gear is included, and away you go!

Fishing Stuart in June I would look for snapper and snook. Not season for snook, but the river is holding and they and great hook ups.

Be careful about when you book in refards to opening day for Red Snapper. It can quickly get "overfished".

Sun’s too hot for fish and some waters can be saturated with bait by the end of the day Sunday. Early morning and cooler weather better.

I booked this trip for my husband for Father's Day. Along with a friend. They had a good time. The Captain and crew were great. Unfortunately they came home with no fish. One person caught a Grouper and my husband caught a Trigger Fish. The Captain felt bad and even stayed out a little longer but nature said No.. This also was the night fishing trip. I will definitely book again.

Ask to catch lots of fish, they will put you on a spot to do that, if you ask to catch big fish, they will put you on the spot but if fish do not cooperate well then you won't catch fish. But in the first spot once you start catching fish you never know, you could catch something big .

Right time of year to land red snapper! Bring sunscreen and plenty of water or Gatorade, your favorite canned drinks (non alcoholic) to stay hydrated. Small snacks are all you need. Most of your time you’ll spend fishing or enjoying the boat ride. If you get seasick, plan to take Dramamine the night before and the morning of - the water can get choppy when you get out in deep water.

I was worried that a tropical storm moved through the day before dumping lots of rain. Captain Bill assured me the lake would be fine. He was right. Bring sunscreen, water and lots of bait.
