Top Fly Fishing Charters in Freeport

Fly Fishing in Freeport

Freeport is the biggest and the most important city of the Grand Bahama, located less than 70 miles from Florida. Thanks to its proximity to the US, numerous resorts, professional charters, and breathtaking beaches, it's also a favorite among anglers. And most of them have one thing in mind when planning their next fishing adventure – the fly fishing Freeport is renowned for.

What to Expect

Grand Bahama Bonefishing is some of the best on the archipelago, if not in the world. Countless fly fanatics flock to the area each year with one goal – catching the "Silver Ghost" on the fly. While other Bahamian destinations are mainly famous for Billfishing, Freeport fishing charters are all about flats fishing. Local guides will take you fly fishing on the extensive sand flats, wading or fishing from a flats boat. Most of the local guides will take you exploring around the Freeport area, the island's West End, or the East End (Mcleans Town is the most popular location).

The best part about Freeport bonefishing is the fact that it's available year-round. Come spring, huge schools of Bonefish will be accompanied by large numbers of migratory Permit. You can also catch them during summer and even throughout fall. Mutton Snapper, Sharks, Barracuda, and Jacks can also be found, especially in the East End's mangroves and creeks.

How to Prepare

Fishing with a licensed local charter means you won't have to worry about fishing licenses, though they are needed if you decide to go flats fishing on your own. Fly fishing gear is sometimes covered by the charter, but sometimes you'll be expected to bring your own – make sure to check this before the trip. Whatever the case, 8–9 wt rods with weight-forward floating lines are recommended if you're after Bonefish or Permit.

You should bring snacks and drinks for the day, as well as sun protection and hats. Pickups can usually be arranged for an additional cost. Your guide will take care of everything else and make sure you have the time of your life fly fishing in Freeport.
