The endless flats of the area offer lots of fish to target year round and, equally important, enough space for all the fishermen who target them. Forget about crowded fishing spots and boat noise. Just when you think you’ve seen it all, Ambergris Caye uncovers yet another hidden gem for your day out.
You may have heard of the Texan Big 3, but now is the time to learn something about the Belizean Big 3: Tarpon, Bonefish, and Permit. All three are present in these waters every month of the year, with a peak in summer during the spawning season.
Chasing the Big 3 is a good enough reason for anglers to come back every year. But the fishing opportunities don’t stop there. You could also target Snook and Jack Crevalle at the reefs. When you want to set the bar really high, aim for Barracuda on a fly.
Reaching Ambergris Caye’s best fly fishing spots is easy, even if you’re staying on the mainland. There are cheap ferries and flights to the island every day. Hook up with a local guide and you’ll be on a great fishing spot just 20 after leaving the dock.
As fly fishing is an advanced technique, some guides rely on you bringing your own fly fishing equipment. Be sure to ask whether equipment is included in the trip cost, or if you need to rent it. You should also confirm whether your guide will provide a fishing license.

The area is beautiful. You can fish either within the reef or past the reef. Be sure to specify with the boat captain what type of fish you are looking to catch. We had a great time.

We fished spinning gear and I brought my own. If you fish with Nano you dont have to bring spinners, I left him 2 brand new set ups. Seems like alot of people fly fish for bonefish here. I dont know anything about that. But you would have had alot of opportunities

Book a big enough boat for the expected conditions. A 26 foot open boat would make for a less enjoyable trip in anything but calm seas. The โdry boatโ was a good choice.

The seaweed issue was a bit of a problem when reef fishing. The bait periodically got hung up on the seaweed and needed to cleaned off. However the water is spectacular and the fishing very good.

You'll be fishing within 10mins from leaving the dock. Its 450 deep just beyond the reef. Deep sea fishing is all trolling, not bottom fishing.

Stay away from the alcohol the night before. Make sure to take Dramamine (deep sea fishing) the night before and the morning of the trip. 8 hours is a long day to be out on the water especially when it is hot.
Plan your trip accordingly and dont be late to the pick up point. You may not always catch what you want but after all it is called fishing.
