Fly Fishing in Puerto Vallarta

Puerto Vallarta’s year-round heat makes this stunning town the perfect place to unwind whenever you want, with the chance of going fishing an added bonus. Come fly fishing in Puerto Vallarta and see a different side to the resort, as you explore the stunning waters of the Pacific and test your angling skills!

What to Expect

Protected from the open ocean by a horseshoe coastline, Puerto Vallarta lies facing the Bay of Banderas. These calm fishing grounds are the ideal place for beginners to learn to fish, without having to worry about getting seasick.

With trips lasting from a couple of hours to six hours on these nearshore adventures, there’s something for everyone. Experienced anglers can get in touch with the captain before to ask if going out for a whole day on the bay is a possibility. Meanwhile, first-timers can learn from the professional, experienced crew aboard a Puerto Vallarta fly fishing charter.

Aboard a traditional fishing vessel such as a “Panga” center console, you’ll get a real taste of Mexican fishing culture. Some trips may take place aboard larger offshore sportfishing boats, with the higher prices a sign of the luxury you’ll experience on board.

What fish can I catch?

Puerto Vallarta offers more than just beauty and the chance to relax. Its fishing opportunities are legendary all over Latin America, with the Bay of Banderas offering up a whole host of exciting and delicious inshore and nearshore fish.

Fly anglers can get their fill of sportfishing by targeting exotic creatures like Roosterfish, tough-fighting beasts like Snook, and plenty of delicious creatures like Mackerel, Jacks, and more. The more experienced among you may be tempted by a trip a little bit further out, where Mahi Mahi and Wahoo are sure to push your skills to the limit.

When to Go

With temperatures reaching the 90s year-round, there’s never a bad time to come fly fishing in Puerto Vallarta. The warm waters attract plenty of fish no matter when you come, so whether you’re looking for a summer vacation or an escape from the winter blues, you’re in luck. The peak fishing season does, however, kick in in spring, with February through May offering your best chance of landing the widest array of fish in these productive waters.

How to Prepare

With the tourist industry in full swing, your Puerto Vallarta fly fishing guide will do everything they can to make sure you enjoy your trip. Most captains offer some bottled water to keep you refreshed, while some will even offer a range of drinks. Most will suggest that you bring your own drinks and snacks, so make sure to stock up before coming aboard.

As most charters also offer conventional fishing trips, they may not always provide fly fishing gear. Check with your captain before hopping aboard to see whether you need to rent some equipment back at the dock.

And that’s that. You’re all set to go on your next fly fishing adventure. If you’re thinking of a trip to Mexico, then why not take a closer look at Puerto Vallarta to satisfy your fishing needs and much, much more?

The fishing was a little slow at times, but the Spanish Mackerel were biting big in the morning. Afternoon slowed down a bit. Were not able to link up any Mahi or Marlin, but did grab a Rooster to end the day!

Last year I fished the bay and got skunked. It is definitely worth the extra time and money to fish the blue water.

Pangas are great for 2 on in-shore, close-in fishing. If you're after bigger game fish, charter a bigger, faster (yes more expensive) boat.

Spend the money and go out for at least a half day. Anything less than that is a waste.

Pick the right boat. Someone who will work hard to got you to the fish. We've had other experiences where it seemed the captain didn't care if we caught anything and didn't want to waste any gas. And sunscreen, do not underestimate the need for sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat.

This month should be start of marlin, sailfish etc. But not this year, some unusual weather patterns and the sea not yet cooled down meant fishing was hard work, with no sign of either.

Time of year means a lot in the species you can target. Make sure to do research, only booking your trip after you know what species you want to go after. As far as the smaller species like Jack's they are very close to the marina and also a lot of fun to go after if the big fish aren't in the area.

We didn't go too far out to sea, but was still able to catch a couple 10-15lb Jacks. We caught one small Spanish Mackerel, but was told they were small at the moment.
