Fly Fishing in San Juan

When you think of San Juan, fly fishing may not be the first thing you think of. Puerto Rico’s capital is famous for its big game offshore fishing scene, but fly fishing is slowly getting the attention it deserves. The incredible local food, beautiful scenery, and a year-round Tarpon season are just some of the reasons you should be excited about coming here.

Which Trip to Choose

Inshore Fishing
The calm inshore waters of San Juan are perfect for fly fishing. In the nearby lagoons, you’ll find a large concentration of juvenile Tarpon, but, now and then, a 40–100 lb specimen will make an appearance. Believe it or not, tropical Tarpon love the rain, so a rainy day won’t spoil your day of fishing. In these brackish waters, you’ll also have the chance to target Snook, Jack, Permit, and Bonefish. Fishing guides usually recommend morning trips for more fish action and less wind.

Offshore Fishing
Only a couple of miles from the coastline, the ocean floor drops significantly and you’ll be in the area where big game species roam. Offshore fly fishing is not for beginners. Catching Marlin is a difficult task on its own, but targeting it on a fly takes it to a whole new level! Another challenge you can seek is targeting super fast Tuna (which reach up to 40 mph) or Barracuda that leap 15 feet into the air like missiles. This trip takes dedication, so you’ll need to take a full day fishing trip and prepare for a powerful duel.

Freshwater Fishing
San Juan river fishing is less popular but still worth giving it a go. This isn’t the usual Puerto Rico scenery with long sandy beaches and palm trees. You’re most likely to target Tarpon and Peacock Bass. These trips are great if you want to stay in the calmest water possible or want to avoid the crowds.

Need to Know

  • Ask your guide if fly fishing equipment is provided or if you’ll need to bring your own.

  • The guest capacity for fly fishing trips is usually lower compared to trolling or casting trips. Confirm how many guests your fishing guide accommodates for fly fishing specifically.

  • Having polarized sunglasses is a must-have on a fly fishing trip.

The San Juan fly fishing scene is building its reputation among international anglers. Come be among the first to enjoy this world-class fishing experience for yourself.

What anglers said about Fly Fishing in San Juan

Bring sunscreen, fishing/sun shirts, hats and good polarized glasses. If you are not a seasoned or experienced offshore fisher donโ€™t be afraid to take some Dramamine the night before your trip. The seas will get bumpy even on the calmest day. Oh, and be ready to reel hard, fast and often!

Bring a cooler if you want to keep your catch. Leave the little ones at home - these are substantial fish that I would recommend for teenagers and above. Pick a charter like Captain Jose with the larger boat to make the trip smoother than on a smaller boat and invest in the 3/4 or full day trip to insure value and catch potential.

Keep in mind that covid regulations are in affect. So the experience might be a little different than you would normally expect. Bait shops are closed and you have to catch your own bait.

Beginners stay in shore. Off shore is for experienced anglers with patience to hope for a hit on a big sports fish.
