Fly Fishing in Maryland

When it comes to reeling ‘em in on the fly, some anglers want to test their skills against hard-fighting trophy fish. Others want to fill their cooler with some delicious dinner options in a tranquil setting. No matter your preference, fly fishing in Maryland has something to offer all kinds of fishermen. The “Free State” is made up of over 22% water, after all! Whether you want to wet your line in the mighty Chesapeake Bay, or explore one of the winding freshwater rivers, you’ll find the perfect opportunity to experience fly fishing your way.

What to Expect

Chesapeake Bay

When it comes to fishing in Maryland, there’s one place that you can’t avoid hearing about – Chesapeake Bay. It divides the state in half, meaning there are plenty of departure points dotted along its shores, including Chesapeake Beach, Stevensville, Annapolis, and Crisfield.

So what’s the fly fishing like here? Well, Chesapeake Bay is home to a huge population of Striped Bass. Known locally as “Rockfish,” these species offer up plenty of hands-on action for fly fishermen. Even better, they’re here year-round, so you’ll be able to target them no matter when you visit. If you want to fight cow Stripers on the fly, however, the best time to visit is in the spring.

Local anglers recommend using 9 wt rods, as well as flies that imitate eels, crabs, shad, herring, and other similar bait fish. If you’re not sure where to begin, get in touch with charter captains who regularly fish the bay. They’ll be able to help you master this technique!

Rivers

Maryland is packed with streams, tributaries, and rivers that provide lots of angling action. After Chesapeake Bay, Maryland is known for being home to the Potomac River. Measuring approximately 405 miles long, it’s one of the biggest rivers in the USA – which means there are plenty of fish here for you to catch!

In the North Branch of the Potomac, you’ll find various freshwater species, but what keeps anglers flocking back here is the Bass. Largemouth and Smallmouth varieties can found throughout the length of the river, but especially the upper section. It’s recommended that you use a 7 wt rod.

Anglers looking to hook various Trout species, including Brown and Rainbow, should head to the lower section of the Savage River. To take full advantage of this fishery, visit in mid-summer, when the fish are biting hard. Experienced waders can even fly fish on foot during this time! Bring along a 4 wt rod, as well as flies such as Woolly Buggers or Hare’s Ear.

Need to Know

Many parts of the Potomac River have specific regulations in place. These change annually, so make sure you check in with a local guide for further information.

Generally, you’ll need to bring your own fly fishing rods and flies with you, even if you’re fishing alongside a charter. If you travel with a charter that’s specifically targeted towards light tackle and fly fishing, you may be in luck and have your gear provided for you.

Aside from that, all you need to do is grab some weather-appropriate clothing and experience the magic of fly fishing in Maryland!

Spectacular nature in the area, lots of wildlife, including fish, rays and bald eagles. Had a great time targeting Rockfish on an afternoon trip with Lures. Anybody from out of town should give Chesapeake Bay a try on light tackle.
