Fly Fishing in California Delta

California Delta fly fishing is becoming more and more popular, and for all the right reasons. With well over a 1,000 miles of productive waters to explore, this fishery has a lot to offer  passionate fly rodders looking for their next angling challenge.

What to Catch

The Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta is the fourth largest estuary in America, as well as one of the most prolific ones. Fly anglers come here from all over the country to target a variety of species, and Striped Bass is the most coveted one of all. Using a floating line and topwater flies is a must to attract these fish.

The appeal of catching a Striper on a fly lies in the fact that it’s a very unique fight to experience, especially if you hook a lunker, and there’s a good chance of that. These fish are relentless fighters and getting them into the boat will be both a feat and an incredibly rewarding experience.

Largemouth and Smallmouth Bass are in the cards as well, though they rarely reach the impressive size of Stripers (in the 2–50 lb range). This doesn’t mean that they are any less fun to catch. Sight fishing for Carp is another favorite of fly fishermen, and summer months are the time to do it.

What to Expect

There are guides who specialize in fly fishing the California Delta and hitting the water with them at the helm is a game changer. You can book a full day trip for about $400–$450 per person, and have a boat, an expert captain, and fly fishing gear at your disposal.

Bear in mind that not all charters have fly fishing equipment on board, so it could be up to you to bring your own – make sure to double-check with the captain. The same goes for your fishing license, drinks, food, and sunscreen. When you’re all geared up, the Delta is yours for the taking.

Halibut! Lots of them. HUGE!!! Leaving from Fisherman's Wharf passing Alcatraz, seeing the sun come up over the east bay ills, watching the yacht regatta, passing all the freighters and cruise ships, going under the bridges, seeing the rising sun reflected off the skyscrapers; it's a gorgeous place to catch BIG fish.

If you've never fished the Delta, this is a great starting point. All services available. June was a bit tough because of the post spawn, but whether or not you catch fish, being on this water is a treat. Beautiful place!

Captain Rooney said that Salmon Fishing is great right now, but I really liked going around the bay hunting halibut. So much action throughout the day!

If your unsure of your sea legs, take a motion sickness medication. Be prepared for Karl to take your sight of land. Have your camera ready for some sensational photos. Prepare for weather and a healthy appetite to consume your catch.

Be sure to go over parking in advance with your Captain. With all the tourists, it can be difficult to find areas to park without a permit.

Layer up for the weather. It was chili out on the ocean. There were a couple of extra jackets on the boat (and the captain offered my wife a blanket and pillow when she was falling asleep in the cabin) but it's always nice to have your own stuff. Sunblock!!!

Salmon fishing needs a long ride toward the ocean, so not very pleasurable for people susceptible to sea sickness. Prepare well before the trip, probably by limiting your meal before the trip and take some pills to combat the motion sickness. Wear thick clothes as well because it could be quite windy even in a sunny afternoon.

Fish with an experienced captain, like Craig Hanson. He knows the water, knows where the fish are likely to be, and has the correct tackle and bait.
