Fly Fishing in Trinity River

If you’re looking for a break from the hustle-and-bustle of everyday life, a Trinity River fly fishing adventure provides escapism at its finest. You’ll get to cast your line against a backdrop of some of the most picturesque scenery that Northern California has to offer. Oh, and the waters of the Trinity just so happen to be chock-full of some world-famous freshwater fish. What are you waiting for?!

This fishery is home to a terrific trio: Chinook Salmon, Coho Salmon, and Steelhead. They all offer something different when targeted on the fly. Chinook Salmon grow to impressive sizes here and will give experienced fly fishermen a tough workout. Coho Salmon are smaller but extremely acrobatic, making them the perfect opponent for newer anglers and children. And then there’s the “Silver Bullet”: fast-moving, exciting, and brag-worthy.

Trinity River fishing guides are used to accommodating guests of all ages and skill levels. Most charter operators run half day and full day trips, either for a “mixed bag” of fish or targeted towards a specific species. Half day trips are a perfect introduction to these waters, whereas a full day adventure allows for plenty of time on the water.

Although it’s technically possible to fly fish the entire Trinity River, the most popular place to depart from has to be the fishing town of Lewiston. Why? Well, it’s located right near the “Fly Fishing Only” stretch of the river, which is usually open from April through mid-September. No matter when you visit, make sure you experience escapism at its finest with a Trinity River fly fishing adventure!

Rules and Regulations

Anglers ages 16 and over will need to purchase a valid California fishing license before embarking on their adventure. You’ll also need to make sure you’re in possession of Salmon and Steelhead Report Cards. Although local guides provide conventional spinning gear, you’ll usually need to bring or rent your own fly fishing equipment.
