Spearfishing in Fiji
Alone in the Pacific, the hundreds of islands and islets that make up Fiji are almost untouched. Surrounded by crystal clear waters and coral reefs, there’s plenty to see without even stepping foot on land. Spearfishing in Fiji lets you discover the riches of the water while getting your adrenaline levels up, landing a delicious treat.
What to Expect
Fish is a staple part of the Gijijan diet, and it’s caught in a number of ways. Most charters out of Fiji offer the chance to go fishing with a rod and reel alongside spearfishing, so maximize your fun and fill the boat all day long!
You’ll find a range of charters on offer in Fiji, from smaller boats that just focus on the reefs to huge offshore fishing vessels. Whatever you choose, you’ll have everything you need for a productive day – including a professional guide. However, the latter is more likely to feature a covered cabin and toilet.
For Beginners
Spearfishing is available for everyone in Fiji, with plenty of calm, safe waters to explore for those of you coming for the first time. Pick a captain with prior spearfishing experience to help guide you through the process, before settling in for a thrilling day out.
Beginners will usually spend their time hunting the reefs, which will open your eyes to a whole new world. Dazzling Snappers, Jobfish, Groupers, Coral Trout, Jacks, and many more will light up the ocean floor, as you put your skills to the test.
How about an experienced spearfisher?
There’s plenty to whet the appetite of professional spearfishers in Fiji. Take an offshore trip to the deep waters of the Pacific and there’s no end to what you can catch. Grab your spear and get ready for pulse-racing experience, doing battle with beasts such as Mahi Mahi, Tuna, Giant Trevallies, Mackerel, Wahoo, and many more.
When and Where to Go
With its tropical climate, there’s never a bad time to go spearfishing in Fiji. Throughout the year, the waters remain a comfortable 80°F (27°C), with visibility of up to 100 feet (30 meters).
Reef spearing is fruitful all year, while some of the bigger beasts offshore only pass by. February through April, and June through October are your best bet for landing GTs, Mahi Mahi, Tuna, and Marlin.
How to Prepare
When spearfishing from a charter, you’ll have several options to choose from. Get out on the water for anywhere from four hours to a few days, and make the most of these rich waters. Most charters will provide snacks and drinks, with lunch on trips that last eight hours or longer. Just bring some swimwear, sunscreen, and a towel, and settle in for a thrilling day out.
Before booking your charter, check with the captain if spearfishing gear is provided. Specialized charters will usually have gear on board, but some conventional fishing boats may require you to bring your own.
Find out what you need to do and come aboard for a real adventure in some of the world’s best fishing grounds. Spearfishing in Fiji – it doesn’ t get much better!
