Spearfishing in Florida

From the Panhandle to the Keys, and back up the east coast, the whole of Florida is great for spearfishing. The warm waters attract a number of exciting fish and are ideal for diving. Go freediving or don the scuba gear and practice the ancient art of hunting under the waves, as you go spearfishing in Florida’s rich waters.

Where to Go

Spearfishing in Florida is only permitted in saltwater, so make sure not to venture into any fresh or brackish waters. Thankfully, with four coasts and the Florida Keys to discover, there’s plenty of saltwater action waiting for you.

The Panhandle

All along the Emerald Coast, there’s exciting inshore waters and productive reefs in the Gulf to explore. Take a spearfishing charter out of Pensacola, Panama City, Destin, or any other popular resort and dive into the water in search of Snappers, Groupers, Triggerfish, and many more delicious creatures.

The “Suncoast”

You’ll find a wider range of fish off the west coast of Florida, as you hunt the bays or the Gulf. Local spearfishing guides will take you in search of Flounder, Sheepshead, and Snappers inshore, or Cobia, Kingfish, and Amberjack along the reefs.
Tampa Bay and Charlotte Harbor are particularly popular areas for spearfishing trips in Florida, with Naples also offering plenty of options. Wherever you go, you’re in for a treat!

East Coast Florida

From the “Space Coast” down to the “Gold Coast” and into the Bay of Biscayne, there’s no shortage of spearfishing opportunities along Florida’s east coast, either. From Daytona and Port Orange, hit the shallows of the Intracoastal Waterway as well as some productive reefs nearshore.  A trip out of Miami will have you  exploring the bays, which stay warm year round.

Florida Keys

The southernmost tip of the US is the country’s number one spearfishing destination. With warm waters all year, a wealth of reefs to explore, and the deep sea just a stone’s throw away, there’s no end to the fun you can have in the Keys.
Hit the reefs and see the world come to life with shining Snappers and radiant Hogfish rubbing shoulders underwater. Head offshore from Key West and you’ll experience some of the best spearfishing in the world. Using the latest scuba gear, you’ll come up against enormous Tuna, dazzling Mahi Mahi, and many more prized creatures who’ll make you work to land your catch!

Need to Know

Many fish in Florida are designated as catch-and-release-only. These include Tarpon, Snook, Red Snapper (depending on the season), and some Sharks. Make sure to only target those you can take home, as well as some invasive species like Lionfish.
Always be aware of Sharks when diving. Your activity in the water my disturb them and, while they don’t usually make a meal out of humans, they may be curious. Your experienced spearfishing guide will warn you of any Sharks and keep you safe.

How to Prepare

You should get in touch with your captain before stepping aboard. Some charters will offer spearfishing equipment, you may need to bring your own, or it may be available at a cost.
With trips running from half days through to full day excursions, all you need to do is choose what trip you want. Bring some drinks and snacks aboard and make the most of your time spearfishing in Florida. With so much on offer, there’s no reason to miss out!
