Captain Chris Gay is a true son of the South Carolina waters, his childhood playground and lifelong passion. Growing up amidst the shimmering expanse of the Atlantic and the tranquil embrace of the coastal marshes, he was drawn to the rhythm of the tides and the dance of the fish beneath the surface. From an early age, he found solace and excitement in the art of fishing, casting lines and reeling in tales of adventure.
While his heart belonged to the sea, Chris also felt a calling to serve his community. As fate would have it, he found himself splitting his time between two loves: the waters he called home and the fire department where he dedicated himself to protecting and aiding those in need. Balancing the unpredictable waves of the ocean with the unpredictable emergencies on land became second nature to him.
But Chris's spirit was buoyed by a desire to share his maritime world with others. Thus, Happy Dog Charters was born—a vessel named not only for his faithful canine companion but also for the joy and camaraderie he aimed to foster among his guests. With Chris at the helm, Happy Dog Charters offers more than just a fishing trip; it's an immersive journey into the heart of South Carolina's coastal wonders.

4 Hour Trip (AM) • 1 adultoIt was one year since I was bit on the hand by a shark while fishing for Red’s - a bucket list fish for me. First time holding a rod again. Captain Chris helped me redeem myself by putting me on four absolutely beautiful Red’s - all 24-31inches. Action was plentiful! Captain Chris was a great time and a lot of fun to fish with. He was very knowledgeable, very helpful, and took us to some great spots. I enjoyed trying different methods as well. He even taught me how to throw a cast net for baitfish. Captain Chris will be my go-to Charleston charter going forward. One of my best days fishing ever!

4 Hour Trip (AM) • 2 adultosMy son and I enjoyed half a day trip with Captain Chris on our first ever inshore charter. Caught a variety of fish including lady fish, blacktip, bonnethead, and sea bass. A patient Captain Chris taught my son how to throw a cast net to catch bait, gave fishing tips for various species for our future visits to the beach, and provided current and historical facts about the Charleston area throughout the day. He is a family man and works hard to make the customer's experience a good one.

At the start of the trip i was told we just want Dad to carch fish, i said ok lets dontje best we can. We started out warming up with blue fish and lady fish then continued on our journey and found more blues and sting rays. As we continued doen some backwater creeks we came to one of my favorite fishing spots. They found out why i enjoyed it. Once the Reds fired up and realized all they needed to have a buffet was to grt a picture taken the bite was on!!!

Redfish candy

Went out sight seeing and found the baits, menhadden has arrived for the summer which means Redfish candy is in stock!!! Had to dodge a few rain drops and the wind will be here this weekend coming but great weather to fish if you dont mind mother nature.

What a windy day, turned out to be great for the reds!! Floated corks and put bait on the bottom, respecting my clients here is a picture of someone wanting hand outs.

The bite is hot and so is the weather

We got out early to beat the heat and find some nice active fish on a incoming tide. Live or fresh dead Menhaden on a carolina rig is what is working well for me. Got on the fish in about 20 minutes and went 8 rounds with 1 breaking us off for the day. “Unfortunatly” all were over over slot so none could be dinner.
