Captain John has been fishing his whole life – and like a kid, he has never lost his sense of wonder about the sea. In college, he studied Fisheries Science at the University of Rhode Island. For many years he was a commercial fisherman, catching everything from Swordfish to Squid, often a hundred miles from land. Lately, Captain John prefers being closer to home, targeting the fish he loves on short trips. Aside from his 31' JC fishing boat, he also captains a pilot boat, which brings pilots to and from large tankers, freighters, and chemical carriers. It's year-round work and has sharpened his skill as a boat captain. The captain also is a writer and photographer. For two decades he has published stories in many fishing magazines, including On the Water, The Fisherman Magazine, Sport Fishing Magazine, Anglers Journal, Soundings, and National Fisherman. Captain John has made videos on commercial fishing for the Commercial Fishing Center of Rhode Island.

Clásica tarde en Block Island de 6 horas • 4 adultosAbsolutely awesome trip with Captain John and Chris! We did the half-day trip out near Block Island and had an absolute blast. We caught a little bit of everything, including mackerel, sea bass, and scup. Then came the highlight of the day, hooking into a MONSTER shark. We battled that thing for almost half an hour before finally getting it up to the boat. Easily one of the coolest fishing experiences we’ve ever had. Captain John was great the entire trip, knew exactly where to put us on the fish, and made the whole experience fun from start to finish. If you’re looking for a great half-day deep sea fishing trip around Block Island, I’d absolutely recommend him. We’ll definitely be back!

I booked a 6 hour trip with JL Charters for myself, my wife, and 4 12/13 year olds. The communication ahead of the trip was good - Captain John gave us a heads up on what’s been biting and my son got to customize our trip from there. We ended up heading off the shore of Block Island. we started by catching some mackerel (bait), then did some bottom fishing and got a bunch of black sea bass, then we used the mackerel to catch a 7 foot shark that we tagged (all 4 boys got to fight it!!!), and then we did some more bottom fishing before calling it a day. Chris, the first mate, was outstanding! Him and John had some great stories and did a great job helping us fish, fileting our keepers, and keeping us safe. We caught a TON of fish. We can’t wait to go out again!

John was proactive with communication before the trip and called us the day before the trip to confirm the booking and provide details on where to find him at the dock. We went out for an afternoon 6-hour trip on a Thursday. There was plenty of parking and locating the Jennifer Lee was easy. The boat was clean and John and Chris had everything ready to go when we arrived. We promptly left the dock at the scheduled time. We stopped first to catch some mackerel to use as bait later in the trip. We caught plenty with each cast before we were chased out of the area by a hungry seal looking for an easy meal. After catching mackerel we headed to the east side of Block Island with jigging reals to catch plenty of black seabass and porgies. After jigging on the east side of the island we headed south of the island for shark and striped sea bass. The sharks were plenty and after lengthy fight, we pulled in a ~7 foot brown/sandbar shark. We continued to try for a big striped seabass but kept hooking into sharks so unfortunately we weren't able to bring any big seabass but still had a great time trying. Both John and Chris provided helpful instruction and great conversation throughout the trip. We were traveling through on a road trip from PA throughout New England but if we ever find ourselves in the area again, I would definitely give John a call for another charter!

Mañana clásica en Block Island 6 hr • 3 adultosIt is our third year we took fishing trip with JL charters (normally 1-2 times per year, it is kind of our must-do now in the summer). We always have fantastic times. The boat is very comfortable, with a cool, shaded seating area that made the trip relaxing even when the weather or the sea conditions are not perfect. The restroom is clean which is a huge plus. The fishing is always excellent, and we always catch good varieties of fish. The Captain John and Chris are friendly, knowledgeable, and work hard to help everyone have a successful day on the water. We would definitely recommend JL Charter to anyone looking for a great fishing experience in Rhode Island.

My wife, my sister, my brother-in-law, and I booked a half-day fishing trip, and it exceeded every expectation we had. From the moment we left the dock, the captain was professional, friendly, and clearly knew exactly where to find the fish. We were on fish almost immediately and stayed busy catching them throughout the trip. We landed a great variety of species, including fluke, sea bass, scup, dogfish, and robin fish. We brought home more than enough fresh fish for an amazing dinner! A huge shoutout to our deckhand, Sean, who worked nonstop to make sure everyone had a great time. He was patient, knowledgeable, quick to help with baiting hooks, untangling lines, and making sure we were catching fish. His hard work and positive attitude really made the trip even better. The weather couldn’t have been more perfect, the boat was comfortable, and the entire crew made us feel welcome from start to finish. Whether you’re an experienced angler or it’s your first time out, I can’t recommend JL Charters enough. We’ll definitely be booking another trip the next time we’re in Rhode Island. Thanks again to the Captain John and Deck Hand Sean for an unforgettable day on the water!

These big striped bass keep hanging around Block Island. They are a lot of fun to catch, pull line, bend rods. Smiles all around. But the fish are too big to keep; they have to be let go. So when the charter says they want to bring fish home for supper we shift our efforts to bottom fish. The bottom bite is picking up. The fish---sea bass and fluke--are settling into the summer haunts.

Summertime

It's here, the summer. Or feels that way to me. Fishing the past few days has been good. Some beautiful Block Island stripers. Big fish that pull hard. The bent rod. Again, as I always say: people love this. I love this. The whole damn scene from the birds to the roll of the ocean.
Some decent bottom fishing trips on the 4 hr trips. Fluke, scup, sea bass.

Bottom fishing June

We are finally getting some good bottom fishing trips. It's not electric fishing; we need to work at it. We fish, move, fish, move. It's work---fun work. People love it. In the end almost always people bring fish home to cook. We are proud of these fish and we want you to enjoy them for dinner. Rhode Island seafood. Summertime.

Some of the finest striped bass fishing

Block Island can truly be a special place. It has a real energy to it. Striped bass, to me, are part of that energy. It's like the Island and the fish have a bond. Lately that bond has been seen in some phenomenal fishing. We've been getting this trophy fish on spinning rods, casting lures and jigs. I love it. Live for it.

We have a lot of bait around. Tons of sand eels and tons of squid. The bait has drawn in the predators. Fishing lately has been very good on big striped bass. We've been getting them on live eels and soft plastics on jigheads. Block Island and Newport have both been good. But the bait has also brought in fluke and porgies. The bottom bite is getting better and better after a sluggish start. See you soon.

Early June fishing report

We've been going light on the tackle. People love it. I invested in some cutting edge rods and reels and we really like them, costumers really like that. On on the new set ups we've been mostly targeting trophy striped bass and fluke. The striped bass fishing has been good. Block Island really is a 5 star striped bass spot. The fluke have been more of a challenge. I'm not sure if the cold winter has something to do with it. We'll have to wait and see how June shapes up.
