This past Saturday Hunter and his dad, Phil, had come down from Virginia to do some Outer Banks fall fishing. They were gifted with favorable weather this weekend and so Hunter thought that it would be nice to take his dad out on a charter. Luckily I was available to take them out Saturday evening to enjoy a beautiful afternoon on the Pamlico Sound near Oregon Inlet. Hunter requested that we started out the trip casting for some red drum and possibly speckled trout. So we started at a spot for just that. After 15 minutes Hunter hooked his first fish of the day. It was a 25.75” red drum that had taken off like a rocket which made all of us think it was going to be something much larger. But once he was scooped up in the net, we knew Hunter and his dad had just caught the perfect sized red drum to take home for dinner! With red drum regulations only allowing you to keep fish longer than 18” and less than 27” to help protect the larger fish and allow them to spawn and grow the fishery. A little later on Hunter caught another keeper sized drum which also was a circus of a fight as the fish got hooked and instantly swam right to the boat confusing all of us making us think Hunter had lost the fish when he hadn’t. It was lots of fun! We then got to enjoy a beautiful sunset over the water and shortly after headed for home! A great evening spent making new friends doing the things we all love to do!
