After spending 23 years in the United States Marine Corps, I now enjoy teaching folks about the fishing in our area. I'm very passionate about Fernandina Beach and look forward to sharing this diverse fishery with the world. I have top-notch equipment and a well-kept boat. This past week we had some spectacular two-hour trips with the younger crowd. Lots of action with some good whiting catches which is great for the dinner table. Had quite a few in the fourteen-to-sixteen-inch range. The backwater trips produced some nice redfish and speckled trout. Most were caught using a live shrimp under a cork. The redfish were in the one-to-four-foot range with the trout being caught anywhere from four feet to 10 feet. There are still the big black drum around with bull redfish being caught at the jetties, when it's not rough.

Fishing Report October 2025
The fishing was on fire for the month of October. The water cooled down in the high sixties, and the fish responded. Plenty of Speckled Trout and Black Drum, Redfish were to be had. Lots of slot fish for the dinner table. Live shrimp was the primary bait fished under a cork anywhere from two feet deep to eight feet deep. Oysterbeds and runouts were productive. The jetties some really nice Bull Redfish with cut Whiting being used as bait.

Fishing Report Week of 5 May 2025
The backwater bite has been really great these past few weeks. Catching plenty of Redfish, Speckled Trout, Black Drum. There were some mornings that we had a high tide first thing and the topwater bite has been awsome. The plug of choice was a 3 1/8 inch Skitterwalk. Live shrimp on a cork has worked well fishing over oysterbars and rocks. Also been using live shrimp on a ¼ ounce jighead around docks for Redfish and Black Drum. Catching plenty of Whiting in the 20 to 30 foot range using shrimp and Fishbites.

Despite the weather being alittle chilly on some days the fishing has been pretty good. We have been getting some really nice redfish and speckled trout. On the days the weather was not freezing and we were able to get on the water the fish were willing to bite. Getting live shrimp has been challangingdue to the water temps, but mud minnows have worked just fine. Using the floating cork over structure has worked well. Also have been using a 1/4 ounce jighead on the bottom aslo produced.

Speckled Trout Fishing Heating Up
These past few days on the water has been awsome. The water has cooled down some and the trout are biting. The trips have been getting numbers of 30 and 40 speckled trout with plenty of keepers for the dinner table. Rigging the rods with 10 pound Fins braided line with a slip cork, 20 pound floracarbon leader and a Eagleclaw 1/0 circle sea hook with a live shrimp has been great. The bite has been good on artificial baits too using the Bass Assasson Sea Shad in the lighter colors. There also have been some nice redfish being caught in the mix. Finding the structure such as oyster beds and pilons have been the ticket to getting on these fish.

Fishing Report for September 2024
Despite all the rain we had here in Florida the fishing has beeen great. The bull redfish have been on a pretty good feeding frenzy. The action has been good at the jetty and in the Amelia river system. The larger mullet have been found in good numbers, which is has been the bait of choice. The setup has been a 7 foot rod and a 6500 Penn reel or a 6000 Florida Fishing Products reel loaded with 65 lb Fins braid. A 4 foot 60 lb leader with a 7/0 Kahle hook. Cut the mullet in chunks and we are fishing in 18 to 30 feet of water. The speckled trout are also hitting good. If you can find the finger mullet it has been doing well or live shrimp on a cork setup has worked well. We are also getting some nice flounder on our trips.
