This was a fantastic experience. The boat ride was brief, the scenery was picturesque, and Captain Jeremy was great. Conversation was relaxed and entertaining. Boat was clean, plenty of bait. We caught 2 King Salmon approx 14 to 18 lbs, a Dolly Varden about 3 lbs and a Jack Salmon about 5 lbs. We took home 15 lbs of clean fish and filets. What an experience. Very pleased.
Captain Jeremy was gregarious, fun, and knowledgeable 🙂 We also took a lot of great pictures but we did not catch any fish. 😞 It was a wonderful experience overall to see Alaska. Just wish we caught a fish. This trip is for everyone 🙂 Future guests should know that the restroom is just out somewhere on shore on the grass and, never, ever, bring bananas on board!
Fantastic fishing trip! It absolutely rounded out our trip to Alaska! We learned so much about the area from our expert guide. Thank you for the great day on the water and a fishing story we will be telling for years to come!
Fun and knowledgeable captain. We only caught one fish but Tracy did everything he could to maximize our chances.
Captain Doug was great. we saw salmon and caught salmon what else could you ask for!! 🙂
Terry tried hard to lock in on the fish. They weren't biting. A few swells. Looks like none of the morning boats got king salmon. Scenery was great with a juvenile eagle flying around.
Even though no catches today the early morning scenery was superb. Wildlife was spotted, moose, seal, and bald eagles flying by. A must do in Alaska!

We had a good time on the boat. The scenery was amazing; just one thing was missing. We caught no fish.

We booked a salmon fishing charter with Captain Ray (“Lucky”) while visiting Anchorage. Ray was friendly, knowledgeable, and clearly has a lot of experience on the water. We also appreciated that he was honest about the challenges this season, explaining that commercial netting has significantly impacted the salmon runs and made fishing much tougher. That said, our experience was disappointing. All three of his charter boats stayed within a few hundred feet of where we launched, and our boat only moved about 50 feet during the entire five-hour trip. Between all three boats, only one salmon was caught. We completely understand that fishing is never guaranteed, and we would never leave a poor review simply because the fish weren’t biting. What was frustrating was the lack of effort to try different locations or techniques. Sitting in essentially the same spot for five hours made it feel like we weren’t being given the best opportunity to be successful. During much of the downtime, Ray was making fishing lures to sell, which added to the impression that there wasn’t much focus on trying to improve our chances. We know there are days when no one catches fish, and we appreciate the honesty about the difficult conditions. However, we would have much preferred spending the day actively searching for fish, even if we still came home empty-handed. The effort and experience are a big part of what people are paying for on a guided charter. Hopefully, this was just an off day, but based on our experience, we expected a much more proactive approach from a guided fishing trip.
For years, if not decades, I always told my friends I would love to go to Alaska and pull a nice salmon out of the river. Our great fishing guide, Jeremey, made it happen! He was the best. He created a friendly atmosphere from the start. We really enjoyed his company, his fishing knowledge, history of the area, and great stories. Our main reason to visit Alaska was to run in the Anchorage marathon on the previous Sunday, which we did. But the trip's main event was our fishing experience. My wife has limited experience fishing, especially from a boat, and was a little apprehensive before we went. But the end of the week, she said it was the best adventure we did, and that's thanks to Jeremy!
We did not catch any fish, but neither did anyone else out there this day. The fish finder showed us there were several in the area, they just weren’t biting. Regardless, the experience was fun. Captain Ray kept us entertained and is very knowledgable. We tried several different spots and he worked hard to find fish. Ray is more like Quint from Jaws than Captain Merrill on the Love Boat, but we figured out who he was pretty quickly and enjoyed his salty, seasoned personality. He is genuine and we learned a lot. The river and scenery is awesome.

Thank you, Randy, for taking the time to share such a thoughtful review and for choosing Salmon Fishing Charter. While we always hope the fish cooperate, some days they’re there on the finder and simply not biting for anyone. We’re glad to hear you still had a fun and memorable day on the water, enjoyed the river and scenery, and appreciated Captain Ray’s hard work moving around and trying different spots. We also got a kick out of the Quint from Jaws comparison — Captain Ray’s salty, seasoned personality is part of what makes a day with him unique, genuine, and full of stories. We truly appreciate your recommendation and hope to welcome you back for another trip when the fish are ready to join the fun!
On an uncommonly cold July day in Alaska, we embarked on our river fishing trip. Six of us in a light rain. Our method, bait and wait in one spot, fish rising up all around us. The fish nibbled on our salmon eggs, but no hard strikes. This was not a trolling adventure. The Captain moved us to another spot. We had more nibbles, but no hard strikes. After testing the waters awhile, he let the boat dift in the curent, guiding us with his rowing. We did evetually land a sockeye salmon, which Captain Ray quickly filletted. The fish were there - they just weren't biting. . Captain Ray was a gas. The fishermen lovered his whimsical stories between his knowledgeable guidance. The directions to the launch pount were good, but I lacked a pre-trip understanding of what we were going to do (I had expected trolling). There were no company logo's on the boats or trucks to add clarty to whom we were meeting. At the end ofour trip te Captain was busy loading the next group on. . I wish we had thought to bring a thermos of hot coffee (uncommon cold spell). Glad we hadour rain gear. I was a good trip executed with the necessary patience of this type of fishing.

Thank you, Dennis, for taking the time to share such a thoughtful review. We’re glad you enjoyed Captain Ray’s stories, guidance, and the overall experience, even on one of those unusually cold July Alaska days. And yes — this is exactly what we mean when we say to dress warm! Alaska weather can surprise you any time of year, and rain gear, layers, and even a thermos of hot coffee can make a big difference on the river. We also appreciate your feedback about setting expectations before the trip and clarifying the fishing style. We do let everyone know ahead of time who they will be meeting, including a photo and the name of their guide, so you know who to look for at the water. You said it well: it’s called fishing, not catching. The fish were there, and sometimes they just make us work for it. We’re glad you joined us and hope to fish with you again.
We had an amazing time. Our captain, Jerry, was fun and personable. The location was stunning. Our captain shared fascinating information about the wildlife and brought binoculars that allowed us to get up close with an eagles nest. Of course it would have been nice to catch a fish but tides were very low and it was super early in the season so we didn’t have high expectations. We loved the experience and would definitely do it again.

We’re thrilled to hear you had such an amazing time with Captain Terry. He loves making each trip fun, personal, and informative, so it means a lot to know that his wildlife knowledge and those binocular views of the eagle’s nest made the experience extra special. While the fishing can definitely be affected by low tides and the early season, we’re so glad you came in with the right expectations and still had a great time on the water. We’d love to have you back again for another adventure!

We appreciate your detailed feedback and are glad to hear that your trip with Captain Jeremy was enjoyable, well-prepared, and productive. It is always rewarding to know that guests value the quality of the vessel, the conversation, the scenery, and the overall fishing experience. Congratulations on an excellent catch, and thank you again for choosing Fisherman's Choice Charters for your salmon fishing excursion while visiting Alaska. We hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back in the future.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience! We’re glad to hear Captain Jeremy made the trip fun, welcoming, and informative, and that you were able to capture some great memories while enjoying the beauty of Alaska. We always wish the fish would cooperate, too, but we’re happy the overall experience was still wonderful.
