Cod are classic New England Groundfish, and Rhode Island puts you close to them. Cold, nutrient-rich waters around reefs, ledges, and wrecks hold Cod through much of the cooler season. Anglers come for steady action and firm, delicious fillets.
Most trips target Cod with bottom fishing and jigging. Bottom fishing means presenting bait near the seabed, where Cod feed. Crews often use clams or squid, plus metal jigs with a teaser above the lure. Stout rods, braided line, and sensitive leaders help you feel light bites and lift fish from rough structure.
Charter days are straightforward and fun. You’ll ride out to reefs, ledges, or wrecks, then drop baits and jigs as the captain holds the boat over fish. This is great for first-timers and seasoned anglers alike. Dress in layers, wear non-slip shoes, and pack snacks, water, and sun protection. Most captains provide tackle and bait, and they can clean your catch after the trip.
Rhode Island offers prime access to Cod grounds in Rhode Island Sound and beyond. Block Island’s surrounding ledges, the mouth of Narragansett Bay, and offshore wrecks are traditional producers.
