Halibut fishing in British Columbia, Canada draws anglers for big, hard-fighting Flatfish. Cold, nutrient-rich Pacific waters grow strong Pacific Halibut, and they hold tight to reefs, ledges, and sandy drop-offs along this wild coast.

Most trips use bottom fishing with heavy tackle to keep baits near the seafloor. Captains anchor or drift over structure and watch the tide. Jigging, which means lifting and dropping a metal lure, also works well. Common baits include Herring, Salmon belly, and Octopus.

Expect an early start and a steady run to the grounds. Bites can be subtle, but the fight is real once the hook sets. This is great for first-timers and seasoned anglers alike. Your captain provides quality gear and guidance. Bring warm layers, a rain jacket, non-slip shoes, snacks, and sun protection. Many crews can clean your catch after the trip.

British Columbia’s top Halibut areas stretch along the outer coast. The west side of Vancouver Island is famous, with productive grounds off Tofino, Ucluelet, Port Renfrew, Sooke, and Victoria. Farther north, Haida Gwaii, the Central Coast, and waters near Prince Rupert offer consistent action. Productive channels like Juan de Fuca Strait and Queen Charlotte Sound also see good fish when tides line up.

Before you go, review local fishing license rules and area regulations. Seasons, gear rules, and harvest limits can change by area and year. Your captain will help you follow current rules, but every angler should check official guidance for the latest information.

    Beautiful day fishing!

Captain Pat was great, knew exactly where the fish would be. Caught nice sized Coho Salmon, Spring Salmon, and Mackerel. He also showed us how to fish for some Halibut. Learned many fishing techniques. He went above and beyond to make sure we had a great day, a good catch, and filleted our fish and packed them in dry ice to take home. Wonderful day. I highly recommend Pat!
