Sailfish Are Biting In Fort Lauderdale

Hello there, Capt. Vinnie here with another Fort Lauderdale deep sea fishing report. This week has been a little bit of a tricky one, afternoon showers have been scaring a lot of people off from wanting to go deep sea fishing right now but the truth is, getting an early start like 7am can keep you in the fish and home in time to get you out of the weather. Now September is a month that is notorious for slow business here but it tends to have the best fishing of the whole year, which in terms makes that better for you the consumer. For the fishing report this week there has been a great bite inshore on kingfish. Kingfish is a very popular fish with a good amount of our customers. Its very good to make smoked for fish dip as well as blackened or fried. These fish have been very prevalent early in the mornings as shallow as 100 feet and have been biting best on our baits fished under the surface. Next species that has been good is blackfin tuna on early mornings, depths around 200-300 feet is where we have been fishing. The blackfin tunas like lures fished a little faster and a little further behind the boat, the most important thing is to not slow down when you get a bite, tunas are a schooling fish and keeping your same speed at the time of a hook up can result in multiple hook ups. Blackfins have been anywhere from 5-15lbs. We are just coming off of a full moon and that means wahoo, there has been a few nice wahoo as a "by- catch" while fishing for species like tuna. The outgoing tide in the early morning is going to give you the best chance at getting that trophy wahoo. Same depths as the tuna is where your going to want to be focusing most of your time, there has been a few bigger ones in the 30lb range but majority have been 18-25lbs. Another species that has been around and is always a pleasure is sailfish. These guys always bring joy to any anglers face with there fast runs and acrobatic jumps, primarily our sailfish season is winter to spring but we are seeing a nice little fall run right now, trolling has been the best option for all types of gamefish being there has been very light winds and a steady current. It is important to pay attention to surface baits with sailfish being around because you want to see the bite before they actually eat it. A lot of times sailfish will whack a bait with there bill and if there is no reaction they will loose interest quick, so its very important for the deckhand to notice that and reel the bait away to get that predator instinct. Hey there Capt. Vinnie here, back again with another great Fort Lauderdale deep sea fishing report. For this week the weather has been excellent besides the heat, we have had some really nice flat calm seas and there has been some fish biting as well. The seaweed this week has seem to slowed down and given us somewhat of a break which intern lets us fish the way we know how to, on the inshore side of things the bonitos or little tunny have been in full force early in the mornings while trolling most depths inside of 150 feet have had great numbers of these fish, fishing with planners to take baits below the surface is going to keep your bait in the strike zone the longest. The best lure choice this week has been a 2.5inch blue spoon, the smaller profile makes it appeal to a lot of different gamefish. Also this week we did get some kingfish on this very same lure, just goes to show you whatever is around is what is going to bite that day. Kingfish have been very sporadic but we tend to see a good run of them in the fall when the mullet come down our coast. Bottom fishing this week has been pretty good when the current has been light but majority of the bigger snappers have been deep, as deep as 400 feet. If you can get those right conditions to be able to fish those depths the fish have been there, Larger vermillion snappers have been the primary catch but we did get super lucky and catch a very respectable american red snapper which is rare for our area but not so rare if you were fishing in the gulf side, you really never know what you might catch out there. For an offshore report this week the hot topic has been mahi, we had a nice push of them and they have been offshore on larger weed patches as well as birds too. The best advice I could give is to be ready with live bait and spinning rods incase you hook up and there is a school of mahi with the ones you have on, you want to maximize any opportunity you might get because it could be the only one all day, other then mahi offshore there has been a fair amount of skipjack and blackfin tuna on birds chasing bait, the key is to look for the birds and keep your lures far behind the boat, the noise of the boat will make the tuna go deep so if you have your baits way behind the boat by the time you pass them they will be on there way up and your baits will be the only thing around. Tuna feed in schools so its important when you hook up with one to not slow the boat down which can result in multiple hook ups. Hello there Capt. Vinnie back with another deep sea fishing report for the Fort Lauderdale area. For the report this week i can say honestly fishing has been a little tough specially trolling, the seaweed has still been an issue and we have been experiencing heavy tides as of late. On the days that conditions have lined up trolling wise we have been catching a good amount of false albacore, as well as some king mackeral. All this action has been taking place in depths around 100 feet and shallower. Fishing a spoon on our deep lines has been producing the best action and getting the most bites. Surface baits that are meant to look like a small squid or flying fish have been getting some action as well. With all this tide there was a small flurry of summer time sailfish, we weren't lucky enough to get one this week but it is nice to see a few caught. When there is heavy currents one thing that is very productive is anchoring up and fishing snapper. We had some very good action on yellowtail and mutton snapper this week fishing as shallow as 30 feet. When you have heavy current in the deep there usually is light current in shallow and that is the perfect recipe for chumming up snappers and free lining small chunks of bait to replicate pieces of free chum. When your anchored up for a significant amount of time your building a spot, so you never know what will show up specially with current and chum, we have been anchored before in depths around 50 feet and had sailfish swim up as well as mahi mahi. There was only a few days this week that the current lightened up enough for us to fish the deep for vermillion and yelloweye snappers and we had some great success. Some of the yelloweye snappers were as big as 6lbs, in my personal opinion these fish are one of the best if not the best snapper to eat that we catch here in Fort Lauderdale. For an offshore report this week mahi have been slow in the beginning of the week but there was a really nice push of them towards the end of the week, right about this time is when we start to see some consistency in that fishery all the way till late fall, i have high hopes for the next few weeks as we have a few mahi trips coming up.
