What a way to start a Monday. Chrisand joined Captain Trevor on the 6am departure aboard our 17' Boston Whaler Montauk, and Discovery Passage put on a show.
Conditions were textbook. Clear blue sky, 18°C air, and a whisper of north wind at just 3 knots. The Environment Canada forecast called for NW 5 to 15 knots and seas 1 metre or less, but out on the water it was glass calm — the kind of morning where you can see line coming off the downrigger. Visibility a clean 10 km.
We trolled hoochies — plastic squid lures behind flashers — with the downriggers set to 100 feet in the main channel between Vancouver Island and Quadra Island. Water temp read a warm 18.2°C, so the Chinook were up and feeding. We worked the softening tide ahead of the 9:17 AM slack at Seymour Narrows and that window did the work.
Three Chinook came to the boat, all released clean under this season's 62-80cm slot rules. The best fish went a chrome bright 14 pounds — right in the 12-16 lb range we see most days, with always a chance at a trophy over 30. Chrisand ran the rod like a natural.
The Montauk is nimble and perfect for one or two anglers who want a classic open-boat experience and a guide who takes the time to teach. We depart from Coast Marina A Dock with free parking at the south end of Tyee Plaza.
