Offshore bite heats up with cooler temps

The water temp has been coldest I've seen in a few years. The inshore fishery was almost non existent for a couple days. Luckily as soon as the cold weather turned, the mangrove, lane snappers, and sharks slowly starting coming back. On the days with decent conditions and adventurous guests, we ventured to a bit deeper reefs looking for a little warmer water temps. We found some nice red grouper (season closed till May) and a verity of quality snappers. Beyond the reef has been decent. Not exactly all the designer fish, but plenty of action to had be had. Decent numbers of of cero, Spanish, and king mackerels, some cudas, and bonita have been caught. I heard of a handful of sailfish being caught, but was not luckily to hook or see any myself.

Yesterday was a pretty special day. Not only for our birthday girl onboard, but also for the crew. We spotted, chased, and caught multiple sailfish in as shallow as 25’ of water on the reef. As we ventured offshore it didn’t take long before we found some December mahi in 150’. We whacked a few mahi, then trolled our way back home, along the way we found some bonus mackerel in hawks channel. Everyday is different and yesterday was certainly one to remember.

The bite has been great offshore of Key West. Wahoo have been caught on almost all recent trips. Mahi are a plenty with a few of our trips catching our boat limit this week. We did have one day last week without much happening offshore, so we trolled the reef and caught a verity of mackerel including a “smoker king”. Our 35’ is perfect for trolling with its impressive outriggers, downriggers, and electric teasers. Dont forget we are one of the few Key West charter boats that has ice cold AC. Lets go get em!!!
