Smiles and fish

The wahoo bite has been hot this week off Pompano Beach, with clean blue water pushing in and the current running just right. We’ve been working the edge and covering ground with high-speed trolling and planer baits, and the strikes have been explosive. Most of the fish are hitting deep baits, but we’ve also had a few crush surface lures while speeding up over the color change. Average size has been 20–35 pounds, with a couple fish pushing over 40. The morning bite has been the most consistent, especially right after sunrise when the water is cooler and the bait is stacked along the reef line. Once hooked, these fish are ripping 100–200 feet of line on their first run—classic wahoo chaos. If you’ve been waiting to target wahoo, now is the time. The conditions are lining up perfectly, and we expect the bite to stay strong over the next few days. Jump aboard and let’s put some stripes on ice!
