We had a wonderful time fishing with Captain Dick! We hired him to show us some areas where we could hopefully catch walleye, and the experience was well worth it.
Captain Dick graciously picked us up right at our resort and provided all the gear we needed. He took us out on Leech Lake to troll for walleye and was upfront with us from the beginning that the numbers have been down and there was a chance we might not catch anything. Thankfully, we were able to land a nice 20-inch walleye!
Beyond catching a fish, though, the amount of knowledge we gained made the trip worthwhile. Captain Dick was happy to answer every question we had and was very open about sharing his knowledge of the lake. He had no problem with us marking our maps with the areas he took us to, and he even pointed out other places we could try on our own at different times of the day.
Another thing we really appreciated was his approach to fishing. Captain Dick doesn't use LiveScope, so the experience wasn't centered around watching a screen and chasing individual fish. Instead, we spent our time actually fishing, learning how to read the lake, and understanding why we were fishing certain areas. It made catching that walleye feel like we had actually found and caught the fish ourselves rather than simply being directed to one on a screen.
We really appreciated how knowledgeable, helpful, and straightforward Captain Dick was. We came away not only having had a great time on the water but also feeling much more confident fishing Leech Lake on our own. We'd definitely recommend him to anyone looking for a guide who genuinely wants to help you catch fish while also teaching you how to fish the lake yourself.
