On the morning of July 28, we began the trip trolling live skipjack tuna (baby skipjack) off Cabeza de Ballena until 8:15 AM, but despite ideal conditions, we didn’t receive any strikes.
After finishing with the live bait, we switched to our trolling spread, deploying a combination of artificial lures and rigged ballyhoo (rigger bait). We worked our way east, trolling approximately 4.5 miles offshore and following the coastline all the way to Palmilla, but the bite remained slow.
On our return toward Cabo, the action finally picked up off the Fiesta Americana area when a wahoo exploded on the rigged ballyhoo. Unfortunately, after a blistering run, the fish managed to throw the hook and escape.
Shortly afterward, a mahi mahi (dorado) aggressively struck one of our Petrolero lures. After a fun fight, the fish was successfully brought alongside the boat and released in excellent condition.
We finished the morning by returning to Cabo San Lucas Marina after another enjoyable day on the water.
