I'm Captain Fabián Ramírez, born and raised in Costa Rica. My family has run a whitewater rafting company since 1993, so adventure and the outdoors have always been part of my life. After graduating high school, I moved to San José for college, but the beauty of Manuel Antonio pulled me back. I spent the next 10 years guiding rivers and sharing Costa Rica's wild side with travelers from around the world. Fishing was always a passion of mine, but I never got to do it as much as I wanted—until my son Kai was born. He was hooked from the start, and that's when my own fishing journey truly began. We started casting for Machacas in the river, then moved to kayaks in the mangroves and along the coast. Eventually, I got my first boat—a custom 13-footer with a 15 HP engine. Eight years later, I'm proud to run fishing trips out of Manuel Antonio, doing what I love and helping others create unforgettable memories on the water.

    I had a blast!!

3/4 Day Fly Fishing Rooster Fish - 10:00 AM1 adult

I went out with captain Fabian in hopes of catching some fish on the fly. He and his crew worked hard all day to put me on fish. The boat was equipped with fly rods as well as light and heavy conventional gear for a wide selection of fishing techniques. Conditions weren’t ideal but they got it done! They had a cooler full of drinks, a delicious lunch and good tunes. I had the honor of being the first trip out on his new boat. There was plenty of room for 2 people casting on the bow. The tackled provided was good quality and the crew was professional and knew their stuff. They took plenty of pictures for me as well. If you’re looking for a good time fishing while you’re in quepos then look no further. I’ll be booking with them next time I’m in Costa Rica.

We really appreciate your patience and positive attitude, especially with the challenging conditions. Seeing everything come together and getting you on fish made the day even more rewarding. Great Day on the Water

    3/4 Day Offshore 6.5 Hours4 adults

We had a great day with Captain Fabian and his crew. They worked very hard to put us on fish but we only got one triple tail early in the day that we threw back. He made us a great lunch onboard with smoked tuna sandwiches. We would definitely go out with him again. The boat and his crew are top notch.

    Great 1/2 day trip!

    Half Day Inshore (5hours)2 adults

Capt Fabian did a great job! He worked hard to find the fish, going further out to where reports of tuna and Sails were following a pod of Dolphin. We ended up catching some tuna, and the overall experience was excellent. On the way in he cut up some for a snack and then steaked the rest for us to take for dinner. We saw hundreds of dolphin in a massive pod, with the tuna schooling around them. It was a spectacular sight. Then we saw a couple humpback whales, multiple sea turtles, etc. the ocean was teeming with life. Capt Fabian’s English was outstanding, and he had top notch Shimano gear and garmin electronics. His boat is super clean and he takes care of it. You can tell he enjoys fishing and wants to catch fish as bad as you do! We fished right next to several large sportfishers, and they were doing the same thing as us at 3x the cost!!! I have fished in CR out of the same Marina 6 times in the last 12 months. Big boats and small boats in shore and off shore. Will absolutely charter Fly Legend again. Recommend for 3 people to ensure everyone has room to fight the fish.

Yellowfin tuna madness, maiden tuna trip

jul 14, 2026 • Quepos
What an awesome day for our repeat customers, Arleigh and Daniel! Today was the maiden tuna trip aboard the new Rambo 27, and it couldn’t have been a better crew to share it with. This was their 6th trip with Fly Legend Fishing in just over a year, and as always, the mission was simple: find tuna. We started the morning catching a couple of smaller yellowfin near the reef before making a long run to another pod nearly 20 miles farther offshore. We were already about 30 miles out, but the reports looked promising. When we arrived, it was chaos in the best possible way—huge tuna crashing bait on the surface with birds and dolphins everywhere. First cast… fish on! A solid medium-sized tuna was in the boat just a few minutes later. Now it was time to look for the big one. We eased up next to the dolphins and pitched one of our live bonitos. It was instantly crushed by a giant tuna that broke us off. We had one last bonito left, sent it out… another giant ate it! Zachary handed the rod to Arleigh, but fighting a big tuna on heavy conventional gear takes practice. After an incredible run, a little slack in the line was all it took, and the fish came off. No worries—we weren’t done yet. Zachary grabbed a Yo-Zuri Twitchbait and fired another cast into the feeding fish. Another monster tuna inhaled it… only to pull the hooks free. At this point, I was starting to get a little nervous. We had done everything right and should have had at least one trophy tuna in the boat. By now we were 50 miles offshore, the afternoon was getting late, and I told the guys, “One last cast.” That last cast was all we needed. Arleigh hooked into another giant, this time on a Shimano Saragosa 14000. After an unforgettable 30-minute battle, the tuna finally came alongside the boat. Fighting a fish like that on spinning gear is something every angler should experience at least once. The new Rambo 27 absolutely proved herself today. After all the running we did—ending up 50 miles offshore—we still had fuel to spare. Cruising comfortably at 28 knots all day, with the incredible fuel capacity and the new radar helping us locate birds and feeding tuna, this boat is proving to be an absolute fishing machine. Days like these are exactly why we do what we do. Thank you, Arleigh and Daniel, for trusting us once again. We can’t wait for trip number seven!

Tripple tail on the fly!

jul 6, 2026 • Quepos
Great day on the water with our new friend Jamie! Our goal was to get him on some fish with the fly rod, so we headed offshore in search of good conditions. Early in the day we found a nice current line loaded with debris and even a few big logs floating offshore. That was great news—I knew it had all the ingredients for mahi-mahi and triple tail. We ended up landing three beautiful triple tail on the fly, which is always a special accomplishment. After that, we started trolling the area hoping to find some mahi, but they were nowhere to be found. We pushed farther offshore into cleaner blue water and spent some time trolling for billfish, but they just weren’t cooperating today. Fishing was definitely on the slow side, but days like this remind us that every trip is different. Catching three quality triple tail on fly gear made the day a success, and it was an awesome experience to share with Jamie. We never stop searching, and that’s what makes every day on the water an adventure. ?

Perseverance pays off! 1 for 1 on pacifi

jun 21, 2026 • Quepos
Our friends Lucas and Tatum joined us for a half-day offshore fishing trip. The day before, we had caught several mahi-mahi and raised a couple of sailfish, so we were excited knowing there was plenty of life in the area. But fishing has a way of keeping you humble. We arrived at the grounds and found no mahi. We switched our focus to sailfish, which was Lucas’s dream catch. For the next four hours, we trolled, searched, and worked hard to raise a fish—but nothing happened. Our half-day trip was officially over, but we decided to stay out for just 30 more minutes. Thirty-two minutes later, we still hadn’t seen a sailfish. At that point, I looked up to God and started talking to Him about perseverance. We had worked hard for this fish all day. My mate had already picked up most of our baits, and we only had one lure left in the water. I turned to Zachary and said, “Give me two more minutes.” As I was saying those words, a dark shadow appeared behind our Yo-Zuri Twitchbait. “Zachary!!!” I screamed. “Ballyhoo in the water, now! Hurry!” The sailfish followed that Yo-Zuri for nearly a minute before deciding to switch over to the ballyhoo. Then it spent another 30 seconds tracking the bait before finally committing. The reel screamed, the fish lit up, and Lucas’s dream became reality. Sometimes the reward comes when you’re ready to quit, when the gear is already being put away, and when nobody expects it anymore. Keep going. One more cast, one more minute, one more try—you never know when your sailfish is already swimming right behind the lure.

1 out of 5 sailfish on our 3/4 day offsh

jan 21, 2026 • Quepos
1 for 5 on sailfish offshore yesterday. We saw plenty of life—fish free-jumping everywhere and lots of activity—but most of the sailfish were just checking out the dead ballyhoo and not fully committing. They’d come in, tap or swipe at the bait, then fade off. Late in the day, one finally crushed the ballyhoo and stayed tight. Beautiful sailfish, solid fight, and a clean release to wrap up the day.
