What a way to spend an afternoon. Lia, Walter and Stephen — first-timers visiting from Victoria — joined Captain Jason aboard the 27' Boston Whaler Conquest for a half-day salmon charter, and the fish did not disappoint.
Conditions were summer-perfect. Air temp 23°C, broken clouds, NW wind a manageable 16 km/h gusting to 23, and 10 km visibility that let us see clear across to Quadra and the mountains beyond. Out in Discovery Passage the seas ran a metre or less — light chop and an easy ride all afternoon.
We trolled Michael Jackson hoochies behind flashers on downriggers set at 150 feet through the main channel. The timing was everything: we worked the Seymour Narrows slack before flood around 3:08 PM, and it lined up beautifully with the major solunar feeding window of 1:52–3:52 PM. The bite turned on and stayed on.
Final tally: limited out on hatchery Coho with 6 kept, plus 16 Chinook released — including a chrome-bright 15-pounder. Every wild Chinook went back to keep the run strong. By the end, as Lia put it, "My arms are getting sore."
The Conquest brought all the comforts — heated cabin, private washroom, Starlink WiFi for sending photos home, and room for groups up to 4. Free parking at Tyee Plaza, departing Coast Marina A Dock.
The summer salmon are here and biting. Spots are filling fast for June and July. Book your trip today at **hidden content**
