Last night’s charter reminded us why fishing isn’t always about the numbers. We started south in the Slot and Herring Hole to set up for a comfortable ride back with the wind. A double‑digit king hit right after we set lines, and a few minutes later our 3752 hybrid copper/lead rig fired with a strong lake trout.
Our guest for the evening was an older gentleman who needed to sit to fight the fish, and that trout bulldogged him for nearly 50 minutes. He stayed with it the whole way, and we landed a beautiful 12‑pounder just as a fast‑moving storm line approached. We pulled the spread and ran for the bay as boats up at Point Betsie raced in ahead of the weather.
The storm passed quickly, the sun broke through, and a rainbow arched over the harbor. We turned back around and fished out front for a while longer, picking up a small king and another hit on the 2002 before the wind made conditions too rough to continue.
While fishing out front of the harbor we enjoyed the Chicago‑to‑Mackinac sailboats sliding past offshore with their spinnakers up, riding the strong southwest breeze.
A memorable evening on the water — not just for the fish, but for everything the lake gave us.
