As someone who only gets to fly fish a couple of times a year, I would consider myself a novice at best. My casting technique was rusty from the start, but Captain Matthew Foster had the rust knocked off in no time. His instruction was clear, easy to understand, and incredibly effective. Within a very short period of time, my casting improved significantly, and I felt much more confident with a fly rod in my hands.
This trip was filled with firsts for me. It was my first time fly fishing in saltwater, my first time fly fishing from a boat, and my first time targeting tarpon. From the moment we launched, Captain Matthew put me on fish all day long. His knowledge of the fishery was impressive. He knew where the fish would be, how they would react to changing tides, and when they would move. Time after time, he positioned the boat perfectly and gave me opportunities to fish that I never would have found on my own.
Beyond his fishing knowledge, Captain Matthew is an absolute professional. He handled the boat with precision and confidence, and the condition of the boat itself was immaculate. It was obvious that he takes tremendous pride in its care and maintenance. Communication before and after the trip was simple and effortless. He coordinated a convenient pickup and drop-off location and kept a careful eye on the weather throughout the day to ensure both safety and the best fishing opportunities possible.
The entire day was an absolute treat. I honestly don’t think I stopped smiling the whole time. Landing my first tarpon on a fly rod with Captain Matthew was an experience I’ll remember for a very long time. For my first outing fly fishing from a boat and in saltwater, I couldn’t have asked for a better guide or a better experience.
Whether you’re a seasoned fly angler or a complete beginner, I have no doubt you’ll have a great trip with Captain Matthew. Just be prepared to put in the work because he’s going to put you on the fish. When I’m back in the Tampa Bay area, I’ll absolutely be booking another trip with him.
