Crazy Hooksets and Patience Gets It Done

Ryan booked a trip hoping to get into a few smallmouth bass. Coming along for the trip were his Dad and nephew Asher. On a tough bite (post spawn) and limited time (half day trip) the boys did great! Ryan was steady all morning, Asher went on streaks and Grandpa seemed to only catch the bigger fish. Asher caught a 3 lb + smallie and a 10 lb + freshwater drum that seemed nearly as long as he was! Ryan seemed to only catch smallmouth with several beautiful fish weighing in at weights up to 3.5 lbs. But Grandpa John was not to be outdone and his patience was rewarded withe the biggest smallmouth of the day, so close to 5 lbs thst were calling it a 5! Just another fantastic day on the water with a wonderful family.

Cory visited from Oklahoma with his wife to see the Falls and see what smallmouth bass on Lake Erie were all about. Leaving his wife to sleep in we ventured out in some windy conditions. It was immediately apparent that Cory was an experienced angler and that proved essential on a stingy bite. We gave it everything we had and he did fantastic. He boated many smallmouth in a variety of sizes, tossed in a couple largemouth and basically wore his arms out hooking many giant drum. The only thing missing was his wife! Well make her come out next time they’re near Buffalo! Made another friend in the process.

Ryan gave his son Wes a gift of a full day charter. Early fears of cold, excessively windy conditions were put to rest. Braving the cold Erie NE wind and morning temperature of 49 degrees, we set out expecting a tough bite. Well, the smallmouth had other ideas. Ryan dropped his lure to the bottom and in less than 20 seconds was hooked up with a big bass just shy of 4 lbs! Not to be out done, Wes hooked his first before his dad released his fish! The battle between father and son continued back and forth until later in the day the young buck gradually surged ahead! In the process also boating the biggest of the day! Ended up with over 40 fish total combined! Tough bite? I think not! Today proved that there’s still plenty of good families out there and thst father / son trips are anong my favorite. Just an outstanding day on the water!
