First Time Walleye Charter

Family vacations to the Lake Erie Islands and a 4-hour afternoon Lake Erie Walleye Experience with BlackH2oDog Charters go hand in hand! With stronger east winds creating rougher conditions in the open lake, I opted to keep this group of first-time anglers in protected water. After an exciting trough ride from West Harbor to the west side of South Bass Island, we headed northwest and tucked in behind Rattlesnake Island for protection while setting our spread. The stage was set for a memorable afternoon on Lake Erie! ??? Program was Berkley Fishing Hitstick 9s 30/30 on one side and BADMO LURES Arrowhead spinners on the other. 2 oz 40 back on the Off Shore Tackle Company OR-12 planer boards. On the corners Big Fish Tuff Tackle Co. TruTrip 50s with jointed flicker shad. On the Dipsey high diver 36 and 40 back Jointed Rapala J7s and J9s. Speed varied from 2.1 to 2.4 mph. While their younger brother was competing in a baseball tournament at the Cedar Point C Sportsplex, this crew decided to start their July 4th celebration the best way possible—with an early morning Lake Erie Walleye Charter. The group included two 16-year-old boys, their slughtly older sister, and her boyfriend. As we pulled away from the dock, one of the boys asked, "Are we going to catch a fish?" I laughed and replied, "We'll catch more than one." That prediction came true in a hurry. We headed west of the islands toward the top of the firing range and found ourselves in non-stop action right from the start. For the first hour, rods were firing constantly with about a 10-to-1 ratio of Sheephead to Walleye, keeping everyone busy and entertained. The crew put their playlist on the stereo, turned up the music, and enjoyed a classic summer morning on Lake Erie. As the trip progressed, we kept making adjustments until we dialed in exactly what the fish wanted: small baits and plenty of silver. After dialing in a productive morning program, we headed back out for a 4-hour Independence Day afternoon charter with Rory and Glenda from Oklahoma along with Josh from Austin, Texas. With holiday boat traffic a little lighter than I expected for a Saturday holiday, I took a risk and found a spot between the beach and Kelly's Island. We started at the island and worked back towards the beach. It turned out to be beautiful July afternoon. The fish made us work for them, but once we got the spread tuned in, the action stayed steady and the crew got to experience exactly what Lake Erie walleye fishing is all about. The afternoon's best producers were BADMO LURES small Arrowhead blades on crawler harnesses behind Off Shore Tackle Company planer boards, running 40 to 60 feet back with 2-ounce weights. The combination of good company, summer weather, and Lake Erie walleyes made for a memorable Fourth of July outing. Rory, Glenda, and Josh experienced a little bit of everything Lake Erie has to offer and finished the trip with a nice catch of fresh walleye. To complete their Lake Erie experience, they also headed home with some local favorite Bayside Provisions breading mix, giving them everything they needed to turn their catch into a fantastic fish fry.
