Halibut fishing in Oregon, United States draws anglers to the Pacific for hard fights and delicious fillets. Pacific Halibut are powerful Flatfish that grow large and hit baits with force. Oregon’s long, open coast and access to deep structure make this a standout fishery.

Most captains target Halibut by bottom fishing, which means dropping baits to the seafloor. Drift fishing lets the boat move with wind and current to cover ground. Heavy jigs and spreader bars keep gear near bottom, where Halibut feed. Common baits include herring and squid. Your crew will explain each technique and set you up for success.

Trips usually run offshore to deep, sandy flats or edges of reefs. Expect an early start, steady action near bottom, and teamwork at the rail. This is great for first-timers and seasoned anglers who enjoy simple, hands-on fishing. Dress in layers, bring a hat, sunscreen, and non-slip shoes. Ocean conditions can change fast, so listen to safety briefings and follow the captain’s plan.

Oregon offers prime access all along the coast. The North Coast near Astoria, Tillamook Bay, and Garibaldi reaches productive banks. The Central Coast from Depoe Bay to Newport and Florence has quick runs to deep water. The South Coast around Charleston, Coos Bay, and Brookings offers consistent structure and less traffic. Captains focus on broad areas, not exact spots, to keep fisheries healthy.

Before your trip, check current rules. You will need the right fishing license, and seasons can be limited by area and ocean conditions. Harvest rules, bag limits, and size limits may change. Always review the latest regulations and follow your captain’s guidance.

    caught our limit both days!

We did a shared boat first day, and a private our second day. We limited out on rockfish both days, second day thr ling cod bite wasnt working, so we shifted out for Petrale and ended up hooking a 39" nearshore halibut and a nice petrale sole. fantastic experience, knowledgeable of the fisheries and all around nice guy to have as a guide. super personable and a fun guy to have as a captain. i cannot recommend him enough

(10 Hour Trip – Halibut (Shared))

    Mark is a great.

Mark gave as smooth a ride as possible through some choppy seas. It took awhile, but he kept us on the hunt for fish the entire time. We fished hard even with a sea sick wife on board. He even stretched the time to make sure we went home with fish. On the way in, he gave us some crab from his pots at the inlet. We ate really well on that crab. He also filets the halibut for me so it is cooler ready. Book this man! You wont be sorry. Thanks Mark!!!

    Great Day of Fishing!

We asked Captain Bob if we could catch salmon and halibut in the same trip so that we could send our two favorite fish back to Texas. He got us on both quickly and we even got a nice lingcod, petrole sole, and 4 different types of rockfish. Can’t wait for next year!
