Captain Max is experienced and friendly

Epic Day of deep sea fishing with my three boys. Captain Max was great with kids. Kept them in line while keeping it friendly and litehearted. We caught trigger, red snapper, vermillion, and sand perch that we could keep and eat. Also he put us on some amberjack in the bay thay gave my son the fight of his life. All in all a wondeful experience. Cant wait to book another outing with Max next year.

    Amazing days on the water

Capt. Justin is hands down the best guide in the area. Does what it takes to put clients on fish, great boat with top of the line gear, and Justin has a passion for fishing and the outdoors that shows in his dedication to putting his clients on fish and determination on the water. If you're in crystal river to fish, Justin is the guide you want!

Gag Grouper fishing draws anglers who love hard fights and tasty rewards. Gag Grouper are powerful reef predators that hit like a truck and dig for cover. They are a favorite sport fish for anyone who enjoys bottom action and firm, mild fillets.

Most captains target them with bottom fishing around reefs, wrecks, and rocky ledges. Live bait like Pinfish or Sardines works great, as do cut baits and jigs. Drop your bait to the bottom, keep the line tight, and be ready to crank fast. Trolling deep-diving plugs near structure can also spark aggressive strikes.

Expect fast, heavy runs in the first seconds of the fight. Your goal is to turn the fish before it reaches the rocks. This makes Gag Grouper fishing exciting for beginners and seasoned anglers alike. Crews usually provide stout rods, conventional reels, braided line, and abrasion-resistant leaders. Bring sun protection, a hat, non-slip shoes, snacks, and a camera. If harvest is allowed, many crews can ice and clean your catch.

Regulations for Gag Grouper vary by location and can change during the year. Always check local fishing license rules before your trip. Confirm if a permit is needed, whether the season is open, and what the current size and bag limits are. If rules are closed or you prefer conservation, consider catch and release.
