Tarakihi fishing with Brett the skipper

Brett is an awesome guy gives a good run down on safety procedures and fishing tips to stop unnecessary stoppages. Helpful with issues that may occur during fishing ie birdnests snags... didn’t make me feel like an idiot. Fair prices if you need bait and rod

Hapuka, also called Groper, is a powerful Groundfish prized by anglers. It lives in deep, cold water and grows large. Hapuka fishing draws people for hard fights, heavy head shakes, and excellent fillets. If you want a deep drop challenge and a true trophy, this fish delivers.

Most crews target Hapuka by deep sea bottom fishing over reefs, ledges, and canyons. Anglers drop large baits with heavy sinkers straight to the bottom. Squid, Mackerel, and firm cut fish work well. Braided line helps you feel bites in deep water. Many use circle hooks for solid hookups. Heavy metal jigs also tempt aggressive fish. Some trips use electric reels, which are motorized reels that help lift from extreme depths.

Expect a serious workout and steady action near structure. Runs to the grounds can be long, and drops can be very deep. The bite often feels like a heavy thud, followed by a strong pull. This trip suits anglers who enjoy strength and patience. First-timers do well with clear guidance. Dress in warm layers, wear non-slip shoes, and bring sun protection. Seas can be bumpy, so consider motion sickness relief. If keeping fish is allowed, bring labeled cooler bags for fillets.

Before your trip, check local rules. You may need a fishing license or permits. Seasons, areas, and gear rules can change. Size and daily harvest limits may apply. Your captain can explain current regulations, but you are responsible for following them.
