Most visitors watch the Bosphorus from a ferry deck. This is the other version – standing on the Beylerbeyi quay at first light, beside a mosque that has watched the same water for two centuries, with the bridge humming directly above you.
You'll fish from shore, the way Istanbul actually fishes – which means you won't have the quay to yourself. Nobody does. By sunrise, the railing is already lined with men who have stood in the same spot for twenty years, buckets between their feet, tea glasses balanced on the concrete. You'll take your place in that line. Your group stays small – never more than 6, always with the same host – but the quay belongs to the neighbourhood, and that is the entire point.
Three hours, and we bring everything: rods, reels, tackle, bait, and the coaching that goes with it. If you've never held a rod, that's the normal starting point here – most of our guests haven't. Light tackle and float fishing are best suited to these waters, with some bottom fishing depending on the day and the current.
These waters run with Horse Mackerel year-round, and with Bluefish and Bonito when autumn turns. European Seabass, Garfish and Mackerel come through too. Whatever you land is yours to take home – that's a fresh dinner, cooked the same night.
Somewhere in the middle, we stop for Turkish tea and homemade sandwiches. By then, the man two metres to your left has usually told you what you're doing wrong, and he's usually right.
Sessions run at sunrise or late afternoon, never more than 6 guests, and always with the same host – Deniz. Children are welcome when accompanied by an adult, and everything is taught from the basics. Come in layers with closed shoes; the quay is flat and easy underfoot, but the water sends its own weather.
We meet on the Beylerbeyi waterfront, and Deniz will message you beforehand with the exact spot, the time, and how to get there.
