Speckled Trout, also called Spotted Seatrout, thrive along Mississippi’s rich coastline. Warm bays, marshes, and barrier islands create perfect habitat. Anglers come for steady action on light tackle and great table fare.
Most trips focus on inshore fishing in the Mississippi Sound and nearby bays. Guides often use popping corks with live shrimp over oyster reefs and grass beds. Soft plastics and topwater plugs work well at first light. Fly fishing with shrimp or baitfish patterns also shines on calm mornings. Captains watch tides, wind, and bait movement to stay on the bite.
Charter outings are relaxed, family friendly, and beginner ready. Expect short boat rides, smooth waters, and lots of casting. Your captain provides rods, reels, and tackle, and will coach you on knots and retrieves. Bring sun protection, polarized sunglasses, a hat, snacks, and drinks. A light jacket is smart in spring and fall. Many crews can ice your catch and clean fish after the trip.
Mississippi offers many productive areas for Speckled Trout. Popular zones include the Biloxi and Gulfport shoreline, Bay St. Louis, and the Pascagoula marsh. The Mississippi Sound’s oyster reefs hold fish year round. The barrier islands—Ship Island, Horn Island, and Cat Island—offer clear water, sand flats, and tidal cuts when weather allows.
Before you go, check current rules for licenses, permits, seasons, and harvest. Regulations can change and may differ between state waters and nearby areas. Your captain can explain the basics, but each angler is responsible for following the latest rules.
