Half Day Trip (morning session) • 2 adultsCaptain Miguel and First Mate Lino were both wonderful - friendly, engaging and full of knowledge about Panama, the local waters, wildlife, history, and of course the best way to catch some fish! We ran 30 minutes past the cargo ships at the canal entrance to the 100' drop where we trolled and hooked up a black fin tuna in about 5 minutes. Bites were steady over the next 90 minutes and we boated 4 tuna, and a nice sized Mahi. Lino filleted the fish for us, and we ended up having a little sashimi and ceviche mid-morning. Wow! It was getting hot, so we ran to Taboga for a quick look around, then back in. Peak Panama!

Full Day Trip – Taboga Island • 4 adultsWhat a great outing! By 8 AM we had already caught so many fish that it was getting old, so we moved on to search for more elusive fish. My son was really hoping to catch a mahi mahi like he had years ago. While he didn't get one, we did end up catching 3 different species. Our captain, Miguel, was great! He served us fresh tuna sashimi right on the boat. When we stopped at Taboga for lunch, the restaurant he took us to cooked up some of our tuna for us as well. It was cool seeing so many different types of ships throughout the day and learning more about what each was carrying. Thank you for a memorable day!

Full Day Trip – Taboga Island • 2 adultsCaptain Miguel and mate Pooras were great ! They know how to fish , very informative on the country and wonderful hospitality !! Caught large sail fish and a Mahi which we had delicious ceviche with on board and some for lunch at Toboga Island . Also caught a tuna of which they fixed some sashimi with and also a grouper. Had several more fish on line that spit the hook before I got them on board. Couldn’t have been happier with the experience on the Blue Lobster with Miguel and Pooras . I would recommend the 8 hour charter because every part of it was great ! I would not want to have missed out on any of the wonderful experience they gave me !! What a day on the water !!!

Half Day Trip (afternoon session) • 6 adultsWe had the best time on our fishing trip. The boat ride out was fast and super fun. Miguel and Boris set up all the fishing equipment while we just enjoyed ourselves. Once a fish bit, it was our time to shine. At one point all 4 lines had a fish. They guided us and cheered us on as we reeled them in. We caught 8 fish total, 1 being a mahi mahi. Boris cleaned it right on the boat and we had fresh ceviche within minutes. Would take this trip 100 times over. We had a blast. Huge shout out to Miguel and Boris for making it memorable.

Full Day Trip – Taboga Island • 1 adultI booked the 8-h tour, hoping to get some Mahi Mahi or Sailfish - After a promising start the action died down. Captain Miguel and Lino made every effort to get me on some fish, but it was just one of those days. They are very knowledgeable about the area's flora and fauna as well as the country - so I learned a lot and did see some great wildlife while trying to get something on the line. Cpt Miguel constantly explained his gameplan and in the last hour we finally hit fish. Jack and Spanish Mackerel found their way into the boat and I enjoyed a nice sashimi. Overall a great experience. Can't blame tour operator or crew for a slow day and the garbage floating in the water which caused a 4 star review.

Fishing in Panama during the rainy seaso

This week, we have been getting the first few rains of the season. This means nutrient-rich waters from the warmer South Pacific will attract microorganisms, which will then attract the upper stages of the food chain, in other words, bigger fish. Pelagics like tuna, mahi, sailfish, and Marlin will be our predominant bites until November.
This day, as we were passing the deepest waters on the way to the Pearl Islands, with an average of 200 feet deep waters, we encountered huge bait balls full of diving birds, which gave us the first indicator of fish around while deciding where to throw lines we spotted some dolphins. There's something that we can tell with dolphins: tuna. We started shifting our lures to cedar blocks on our trolling lines and had our spinning lines with poppers ready to cast them. Whenever we got a bite on the trolling Lines, we immediately cast those poppers and maximized tuna bites. Welcome to Panama game fishing mecca! Sail fish surpise!

The fishing species in Panama are pretty well marked mainly in 2 seasons:
The rainy season is in the summer; this time, the waters get warm, which is best for sea fishing. The other season is winter, which is not a cold winter (same temperatures as summer), but it's when the water gets chilly. And we focus on deep-water species.
However, between these marked fishing species seasons, there are unexpected species surprises! For example, since June, we've been getting a more active than usual number of sailfish on our bites.
From half-day trips to Extended trips, the extended South Pearl Islands and full-day Pearl Islands have the most sailfish catches. We practice catch-and-release for this species, and when possible, we board the species for a nice picture and then release it.
The most popular lures for attracting them have been Ballyhoo rigged with an artificial skirt and normal fake surface squids.
