My name is Ryota Onodera, captain and guide at Reeltime.
After graduating from medical school, I worked in emergency medicine in Sapporo, Hokkaido. There, I gained extensive experience treating critically ill and injured patients, including serving on a physician-staffed emergency helicopter team.
I later worked alongside American medical professionals at a hospital on a U.S. Air Force base in Japan. I am a board-certified emergency physician and currently continue to practice medicine in the Goto Islands while operating Reeltime.
Fishing has always been a major part of my life. During university, I worked at a fishing tackle shop for four years and spent as much time as possible on the water. Even after becoming a doctor, I continued fishing nearly 100 days a year, traveling throughout Japan and overseas in search of new species, techniques, and experiences.
In 2025, I moved to Fukue Island after being given the opportunity to own a boat in the Goto Islands. Since then, I have been working to build the kind of fishing guide service I have always dreamed of—one that combines safety, professional support, local knowledge, and a genuine passion for finding fish.
There is always another fish waiting somewhere in the Goto Islands.
Let’s go find it together.
