Spearfishing in Indonesia means warm, clear water, rich reefs, and strong currents that attract life. You can hunt shallow reefs one day and drift the bluewater the next. It is an exciting way to meet Indonesia’s game fish up close.

On the reefs, you can target Snappers, Groupers, Jobfish, Emperors, and local Trevallies, including Giant Trevally. Along edges and drop-offs, Spanish Mackerel and Wahoo rush past in the current. In bluewater, Mahi Mahi, Yellowfin Tuna, and Dogtooth Tuna offer powerful runs, with Sailfish sometimes cruising by.

Most trips focus on freedive spearfishing. Guides position the boat up-current so you can glide over reef edges, pinnacles, and bait schools. Simple gear works best here: a well-tuned speargun, a float and flag for safety, and flashers to tease pelagic fish.

Beginners can start in protected shallows with coaching on breath-up, dives, and safe shot placement. Experienced hunters can chase fast pelagics in open water and around current lines. Charters usually include gear and safety briefings, but bring your mask, reef-safe sunscreen, and a snug wetsuit for comfort.

Indonesia is vast, so choose your area by goals and season. Bali, Lombok, and the nearby straits have reliable currents and mixed reef-to-bluewater action. Farther east, Sumbawa, Flores, Komodo, and Alor offer steep drop-offs and tuna lanes, while Sumatra and the Mentawai Islands bring productive reef systems and offshore grounds. Parts of Sulawesi and West Papua hold world-class terrain where local rules allow access.

Regulations vary by province and by marine park. Always check local license and permit needs, closed areas, and harvest rules before you go. Respect no-take zones and only keep what you plan to eat.
