These waters are known for Chinook Salmon, Coho Salmon, Lingcod, Halibut, Flounder, Rockfish, Black Rockfish, and more – with any luck, you’ll have tight lines in no time. On these trips, you can expect to troll and bottom fish. Capt. David can also take you Flounder gigging. Any fish within the legal limit is yours to keep. Plus, you can have your catch cleaned. Now that’s dinner!
Looking to get the whole family outdoors? Kids are absolutely welcome! Be sure to ask if child-sized life vests are available, otherwise you should bring your own if you have a preference. And, you can’t go wrong with snacks so that nobody gets grumpy on an empty stomach! Bring refreshments!
Capt. David operates a 28’ Cruiser that can carry up to 4 passengers. It comes with downriggers, and all the essentials no fishing machine can run without. There’s a toilet on board for your convenience. Your captain will provide rods and reels, as well as lures.
You will need to get a local fishing license before the trip. A Tidal license is required. This information is available online, or you can ask the captain. Salmon require a tag/stamp to keep them, so make sure you purchase one with your license. A few items to bring include sunglasses, sunscreen (non-spray), and bottled water. Alcohol is allowed onboard.

Afternoon half day trip on June 18, 2024
My family of five had a wonderful time! David is an excellent captain for all ages. We had a large salmon on the line and right before it was netted it got away and David handled it so well because I was more frustrated than he was. His knowledge was vast and I really appreciate him sharing recommendations about Ucluelet and beyond. If I make it back to this area, which I really hope will happen, I will immediately book David because I predict he will be quite popular in the years to come. Thank you, David, for the great experience. And the freezer full of fish!!

10/10 would recommend! We've been on another charter in the past, though David's skills, professionalism, attention to detail, and attitude were miles ahead! For a short 4-hour trip, we caught 2 salmon (one coho, one chinook) a huge ling cod, and several crabs. David was very accommodating to what we wanted to catch, and when the waters got a bit rough, he helped change up the game plan so that everyone was more comfortable. Our family of 4 had a blast and was excited about all the variety of seafood we caught! We would definitely book again!

Afternoon half day trip on July 12, 2024
We had a great day of fishing with Captain Dave. We caught five fish in a veryshort 4 hour trip. My son had a good long fight with a massive salmon which was surely entertaining. Captain Dave was great with the kids and and thought them great fishing techniques. The scenery was tremendous and watching the bald eagles fish was a definite treat. Captain Dave had a good connection to vacuum seal the fish for transportation, just right up the street. The trip was seemlessly convenient and efficient. I strongly recommend Bonzai!

Afternoon half day trip on September 11, 2024
We booked an afternoon trip with Captain David and it was great! He brought us out to jig for Lingcod and Rockfish and we tried trolling too. Even though we only had 4 hours, he even brought us out to try and catch a couple salmon and check his crab traps! His stoke was infectious and he was ON trying to catch us fish. Super fun, would 100% recommend him to others wanting to experience Ukee on the ocean! We left with a bunch of fish and cooked one during sunset at long beach :)

Two of us booked for a couple of days with Captain David. Had a great time!. David is very skilled and knowledgeable and had so much energy and positivity. We ran into some rough weather on the first day and headed to calmer waters as one of us got seasick, but that is to be expected sometimes. David kept us going and we ended up with some good sized salmon. Second day got us more salmon and some halibut. I highly recommend Captain David and plan to book with him again next time!
